The playoff hunt is more dynamic than anyone makes it out to be. You are not just chasing a specific team you are chasing a SPOT. A spot for which about 7 teams are also chasing and within reach of.
Meanwhile, the Bulls, 7th, have won as many games as we have over the past ten (6) and in that we have not gained on them at all. This is something you look at. The Bobcats have won 5 over 10 so we gained 1 game over them but we face them Friday and that is a MUST WIN game against a team that is known to give us a lot of trouble.
Overall you do not look at games behind, you don't look at the teams you are chasing, but you look at the teams that are also along side you chasing the same goal and most important you look at a win total you expect to give any team a playoff birth.
That win total is about 38 games right about now. That means we must play .500 ball the rest of the way. While we are playing quite well our schedule is also at it's weakest point. That is another thing you look at. Our schedule gets increasingly more difficult as time goes forward. How we respond to that will dictate whether or not we are in a playoff hunt.
You start to think playoffs in March which coincides with our toughest month of the season.
You don't look today. You don't beat the Bobcats on Friday and say "Okay, we're 8th, we're playoff bound! Stop the season! GO KNICKS!!!"
For if you do then you're just one of those fans that lives and dies by every win and loss. You win, you're the best team in the league, you lose, you're the worst team in the league.
Quite a bad way to be a fan IMO.
Stand back, enjoy that we've hit a winning streak here, and then watch and hope they carry that winning spirit into the teeth of a really horrible March schedule.
