Start spreading the news: Jason Bay appears headed for New York. The free agent slugger has agreed to a contract with the Mets, according to a report on CBS radio station WFAN.
Bay, 31, had reportedly been offered a four-year deal for about $65 million, though details of the contract were not yet known. According to WFAN's Mike Francesa, the team will make an official announcement next week pending a physical.
Widely considered one of the best free agents available this offseason, Bay hit 36 homers and drove in 119 runs for the Red Sox in 2009.
Yesterday, the team announced they signed right-hander Kelvim Escobar to a one-year contract. He was expected to get $1.25 million.
