From Berman's blog, a quote:

"In a roundabout explanation, D'Antoni said before flying to Detroit, "There's certain guys in this league - Toney, Marcus Landry - you can play for one minute and they're fine. They'll give you everything for one minute and be over there cheering. There are other guys who need roles and need them defined. Nate Robinson. Al (Harrington) Eddy (Curry), Will (Wilson Chandler). If you don't have that bulk of minutes, you can't just throw them out. There's a disrespect there. You have to respect what they've done. I don't have a role for those guys.''"

That last sentence - "I don't have a role for those guys" - am I reading that right? Is he saying, in effect, that Al and Will are goners after this season? Interesting.

The new new core: Randle, RJ, IQ. Maybe Mitch. Future pick. Future trade. Future FA.

I don't think that's what he meant. He's saying you have to either play them bulk minutes or not at all, not scrap minutes. "Those guys" I think he's talking about Nate and Curry, the guys that are not getting minutes at all.

D'Antoni digging himself a nice hole. Lets see what he says when/if we go on an extended losing streak.

Seems to me like he and Walsh need to have a sit down and get on the same page.

It's not that hard to understand at all. He's saying that some guys can't be played in spot minutes. They either have to play allot (Al, Wil) or not at all (Curry, Nate). All four of these guys need to have a real role on the team, but he doesn't have roles for Nate and Curry.

Nate can't play off the bench cuz the shiny things distract him. Eddy congeals on the bench.

It'll be interesting to see if Will is here next year or if he's used as a trade asset. I get the sense from the D'Ant quote that he's viewed as expendable.

Considering Wilson plays 34 minutes and Al 32, how else would you read it?

There is no other way to read it.

The same was also true of Hughes at the beginning of the year. MDA even said that he was not putting him in during garbage time or for a minute or two because he respected Hughes- as much as saying it would be beneath Hughes to be placed in such situations.

I agree, about D'Antoni respecting these guys. Unfortunately, that means that TMS is wrong. (Sorry TMS). I think a lot of guys on this forum share that respect for a player like Eddy Curry, so much so that they hope he never plays a game for the Knicks ever again. And they also have that kind of respect for Nate and what he can bring to the table, and we all deeply respect Duhon too much to see him ever dribble a basketball again. So I'd like to see D'Antoni extend this great respect he has for our players to more guys who are deserving of it, like Duhon and Jeffries.

i agree, what was i thinking... Marcus Landry deserves respect too... i'm glad MDA acknowledges deserving players... wish he would stop disrespecting guys like Fishlips & Duhon tho by making them play 30+ a night... have some respect for guys who've earned it like Nate & Eddy!

Let me clarify, one is a clown and the other is maybe the opposite of what MDA's center should be like. There are no minutes for them. And he respects their choice to be who they are, just that respect doesn't= minutes nor does it equal the lack of minutes. One being a clown and the other being who he is = no minutes. I don't think there is any other meanining to this.

He means that he doesn't have a role for Curry and Nate.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

That's what I thought too, but he didn't make it clear the way he said that. Logically, it would follow that all four players were included in the "I have no role for those guys".

We should note that this is from Berman's notepad, which is suspect in itself.

He's postulating that those guys are volume players, as opposed to a Chuckie Atkins type.

I don't know if that's right. Al and Nate have been such a big part of the team when they've played here, it would just be a major adjustment, but naturally I think they are bench players for good teams.
