Are we really just two wins behind from being in the last playoff spot?

Weird. I don't care if we make the playoffs or not, personally, but not being in the bottom 10 teams would be a success. Getting a team to take Curry with Nate Robinson would be beyond success. But one step at a time.

I actually think we can keep winning games. DAntoni did something I didnt think he could, which is find a rotation of 7 guys that are willing to play defense every minute they are on the floor. Douglas is getting a little run but we are basically playing Lee, Chandler, Duhon, Hughes, Gallo, Harrington and JJ 30-40 minutes each every night and thats fine. When everyone defends the talent on this team comes out. Suddenly JJ looks like a good fit doesnt he? Because everyone around his is keeping a body on their guy. Our Dec schedule is loaded with winnable games. Knicks could be .500 by end of Dec if they stay focused?

Give MDA credit. Looks like he's got it right. I hope they sustain

I'm still worried that a number of our victories have *'s next to them. Phoenix and NO are teams we've matched up with, for whatever reason.

Nets for 2? Nuff said there.

Also, if MDA has found a mix of players that try and do play defense - what took so long? What was training camp all about?

About finding out that we have team loaded with losers and menatlly shot players.
Now it takes time to make some of them NBA ready.

Damn franco, smoke something already. Things are going well.

We play the next six games against teams with losing records. Close your eyes, cross your fingers and ask santa to bring us to .500.

Actually, that's what training camp was about. But it took longer than that. Now, maybe the others will get the message.

If we can avoid the lakers, celtics, and cleveland, we should be able to get to .500 by mid-January the way the team is playing now. The NO game on Friday is a real test. Can they bring the same intensity on the road?? If we can, we should beat an overrated NO team. I would love a 6-7 game win streak to put us back into contention.

the games are at least interesting which is all any Knicks fan can really ask for at this point... Gallo is developing into a very good player & the team is showing some cohones for fishmike... the only thing left is for Jordan Hill to get some run this season... i'm patiently biding my time until that happens.

After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

Nets just beat the Bulls to help our cause.

Interesting that the NETS have beaten CHI and CHA, the two teams we play next. But we handily beat the NETS. We are playing at a higher level than any of these teams right now.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Contention?

Conention for what?

If we actually had a GOOD season, not a season that showed promise or one that develop rookies, but a seaon where we finished improbably in the top 5 in the East, WHAT WOULD WE LOOK LIKE WITH A MAX FA OR TWO NEXT YEAR?

We'd be downright scary, and pushing for a late playoff run in three short years.

I know it's farfetched, but i'm friggin' excited and happy. nobody burst my bubble, dammit.

I'm lovin' this outlook! Looking up instead of looking down! We still have to get something out of 3 more players. Curry, JHill and Nate.

Well, you can only look down for so long. I think the overall improvement under MDA is undeniable and the future is looking as bright as it ever has in my memory as a Knicks fan. And I do hope we get something out of Curry and Nate, namely a nice trade to ship them both out, preferably together at the same time, and wash our hands clean. J Hill, we give time to because of his rookie status.

Contention to make the playoffs at all. After a 4-5 year abscence, I would just be happy to see the team compete in the first round of the playoffs. If this team can get into the playoffs, then Lebron would start to think that if he comes here and takes on Harrington's role, we should be able to get into the top-5 next year, and with Jeffries and Curry coming off the books then, we should be able to add another near-max FA the following year, with Gallo, Hill, and Douglas still on their rookie deals but with 2 years under their belt.

39-43 made the playoffs last season so we will use that as a bench mark here.

Format is: Current place, team, record, last 10, rec %, L10 %, record needed to go 38-44 (allowing NYK to get in with 39 wins), rec % to go 38-44.

8th. Detroit, 9-12, 4-6, .429, .400, 29-32, .475
9th. Toronto, 10-14, 4-6, .417, .400, 28-30, .482
10th. Wizards, 7-12, 5-5, .368, .500, 31-32, .492
11th. Chicago, 7-13, 1-9, .350, .100, 31-31, .500
12th. Pacers, 6-13, 1-9, .316, .100, 32-31, .507
13th. Knicks, 7-15, 4-6, .318, .400, 32-28, .533 (we need 39 wins to win 8th outright)

Yes, we are 13th, Pacers 12th, because we are 10.5 games out of 1st, the Pacers 10.0 games out.

As you can see, the Pistons, Pacers, Wizards are all playing equal to better than us even over just the last 10 games, the same games we were playing much better in. We made no ground here.

Keep in mind that 40 or 41 wins to make the playoffs would compound our problems quite a lot. Every year the 4-10 east teams start off slow it seems and then they get going and raise their win percentages as time goes forward. Every year it seems 35-37 wins will make the 8th seed early on but it ends up being 39-41 wins as those win percentages rise with teams playing better.

For the Knicks:

Record -- Needed wins % win Percentage of remaining games.

39-43 - 32-28, .533
40-42 - 33-27, .550
41-41 - 34-26, .566
42-40 - 35-25, .583

As you can see it goes from slim chance to no chance in a hurry.

On one hand I think this month determines what happens. Its a pretty soft schedule and if the Knicks play like they have been they could even by .500 by months end.

That being said I am not sure it matters. I firmly believe (just like last year) Walsh will dump guys if it gives him a chance to get more draft picks or lose Curry or JJ's contract.

I don't think Walsh dumps anyone for just picks - he will to lose salary. But his MO has been to make moves that keep us competitive.
