some time ago I hear or read somewhere that the are 2 basic ways to play d. One is with a defensive backcourt, where the guards would try to force a turnover away from the basket: getting into passing lanes, have great lateral quickness to stop penetration, get steals off of inbounds passes, try to trap guys in the halfcourt and in general keeping the opponent out of the paint- all of this usually happens with average or even poor defensive frontcourt cause its damn hard to have so many 2 way players and having all 5 starters great on d. The other scheme being having skilled big men, you know the deal make them not want to come into our paint; funnel penetrators towards your big men, then they get blocks or at least knock some dudes on their asses( as i am saying this all i can see is Oak going up for a rebound)Well you get the idea, so what do you think? Are there other options maybe?

i don't know what kind of D would be most effective, specifically, but i know that ANY kind of D would be more effective with some good chemistry between the players. it doesn't really matter what kind, what matters is that everyone is playing for the Team.

gotta have both... most championship teams have a dominant shotblocker in the paint AND play tough D on the perimeter.

You really cannot approach defense like that. It all depends on your players and the best D would be a defense where you had solid guards that could get stills and keep guys in front of them and some low post defenders that can guard the PF and C one-on-one and block some shots. The best defensive team is one that can make it difficult for opposing teams to score without doubling and that can guard the pick-and-roll effective by either having guards that are good at fighting through screens or have similar sized players that can switch effectively.

In short good defense is the opposite of Knicks defense.
If yo will tell any NBA player that he defend like Knicks... you can get your a..ss kicked.

i think for the Knicks a good defensive backcourt would do more. We"d force turnovers earlier on the shot clock- more posessions.

We should use the Zone a lot more than we do.

Douglas-Hughes-Chandler-Gallo-Hill/Darko why not try that every now and again and run the offense through Gallo to try to get him going. I have never seen a 3-13 team without a lottery pick not play rookies.

I will say looking at his offense occasionally on MSG when he is breaking it down it's hard to run an offense when the players don't anticapate and really bust their ass to get in the right spots

you think? zone defend interior better you think? i go with that. we let up easy points now in middle, we make teams shoot us out, they lose, is that logic? i agree if that is logic.

i heard there was this defensive style where the players actually commit to trying to stop their man. i'd like to see us try that a little and, if that don't work, then let's dial up mck1's dealer.

Not for the entire game, but if our players are coached well enough to go into and out of a zone defense that could throw off opposing offenses. Sometimes jumpshooters need a hand in their face to be effective. Lets see how they do every once in a while downcourt where we switch to a zone. It should confuse them momentarily and could even cause turnovers.

i'm sure there are a lot of people on this board that have forgotten more about basketball than I know.

but IMHO the consistent threads that I see in great defenses historically is that

- there is a team wide effort to take defense seriously and hold teamates responsible. i don't think the best designed defensive scheme works if 1 or 2 out of 5 players on the floor are giving half hearted efforts.

- the players on the floor communicate with each other

If you have a bunch of slow players then man to man or a pressing defense probably won't work. if you have a bunch of super athletic players with low basketball IQs zone probably won't work.

maybe i'm off my rocker but effort and communication seem to be key. your best players and veterans leading by example and holding other people accountable seem to be key.

i don't see how any system can work if your best player lollygags on defense and even ONE other player follows suit.

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

I dig it. But what you call 'coached well enough' i call being 'coachable' in the first place. Just an unruly bunch, for all reasons we talk about on board.

I know in Rec-League B, we played the zone, I held down the middle or a wing in the 2-3.
