For every 30, 40 point game he has, he has about 3 or 4 20% shooting nights. Even on his best days, he takes ill-advised shots and forces the issue. It's really hard for this guy to pass the ball, it's not in his blood. It's fun to watch, when he takes crazy three-point shots and they go in, but only for the most casual of fans. Anyone with an interest in the long-term future of the franchise cannot be seriously in favor of keeping this guy around.
I take crazy shots on the playground sometimes, and sometimes I have a great day and they go in. Does this make me a sound basketball player? hardly. This is the case with Al. Lot's of talent, not enough discipline or direction. He is best in a 15-20mpg role off the bench; not as your go-to guy.
Even when he plays 'great' he manages to hurt the team. Do not let the statistics fool you.
How can you make these statements and actually post the game log for Al Harrington? Did you look at his game log? And you say the stats aren't important? Are you using them to support your argument or not? Al only has 3 games all season where he shot less than 30%. He is averaging 44% from the field. He hasn't complained about being the 6th man. His worst games are those when he gets less than 20 mins. Actually, it might be that he is having a bad game that keeps him from playing more minutes. He might be the only player than consistently drives the ball. And he plays defense.
Let's take your argument at its strongest-- ball movement tends to end with him. Truth is, besides David Lee, nobody else is playing well enough to command the ball. Second, the Knicks offense is stagnant around the perimeter. How often during Al's isolation plays is there any movement off the ball... actually, how often do the Knicks have any movement off the ball? Al is a walking mismatch because he is too fast for PFs to guard off the dribble and his range forces PFs to step out.
I am not trying to critique the orchestra on the Titanic here, but your analysis is flawed. I don't always love him, but he is the best player we have. His performance last night was refreshing.
