1-9 factors out to 10-71

"Another Hall of Famer, Larry Brown, was one year removed from winning an NBA title when he joined the Knicks. In Brown's tumultuous season, the Knicks won 23 games. It was in Brown's final days with the organization that he famously described himself as a "dead man walking." The position, not to mention the corporate culture at Madison Square Garden, will do that."

- Frank Isola

If we know that the majority of the Knicks roster (7) are not under contract for 2010, why are we worried about the number of wins this season? Of course making the playoffs would be exciting, but let's be real here, the playoffs were only in play for the suits responsible for marketing. The inevitable turnover reminds us of the tentative way Knicks players always seem to play before the trading deadline - no confidence or trust in each other.

Overheard in the locker room (Guarantee: all dialogue reported verbatim)

D'Antoni: "sure, none of you guys will be here in five months, but go out and dive on the floor for loose balls like Oak said... play hard anyway..."

Players: (cheering wildly) "yeah, let's go get 'em!"

Duhon: (thought bubble) "I miss Coach K"

Nate: (thought bubble) "I won the dance off again, I rule..."

Lee: (thought bubble) "double double, double double.."

Harrington: (thought bubble) "just shoot it kid"

Chandler: (thought bubble) "damn, I have a lot of tats"

Curry: (thought bubble) "damn, I'm hungry"

Jeffries: (thought bubble) "hey, I'm 6'11"

Gallo: (thought bubble) "ready, aim..."

Landry: (thought bubble) "somebody owes me bus fare..."

Douglas: (thought bubble) "it was harder playing Harry in the backyard"

Hill: (thought bubble) "oh, the ball goes IN the orange hoop? why didn't you tell me"

Milicic: (thought bubble) "play me or trade me"

I really don't care for our win/loss record right now. The only thing I care about is the advancement of our youngins. Gallo, The Mayor, TD, Hill, Landry. I want to see those guys get a lot of PT. I also want to see what we have in Darko. Now, I am adding Eddy into that list because of the work that he has done getting his body to an ideal playing weight. No D Lee and Nate, I am neutral. They are young vets but I am getting tired of their shortcomings.

If we win 10 games this season, so be it. Just prepare the youth for tomorrow.

Everything is being questioned, from D’Antoni’s run-run-shoot philosophy to his lineups and substitution patterns. Walsh said the issue was not the system but the players’ failure to fully embrace it. - Howard Beck, NYT

“In the style we’re playing, if you’re not in all the way, you’re not going to look good until you get in all the way,” he said. “You can’t run halfway.”

D’Antoni spent the last two practices emphasizing defense and pushing the tempo while pondering modest changes to the rotation. The rookies Toney Douglas and Jordan Hill will continue to get more playing time.

D’Antoni said he was still searching for the right combinations, while dismissing the possibility that the Knicks might not have any.

“I’m not there yet,” he said. (end of Beck article)

Teamwork requires trust. Trust starts at the top.
