I remember back in the days-when Tricky Dick Nixon was Prez- I was an offensive lineman coming up from a good junior varsity team to play on the HS varsity, which had its entire O line returning from a disappointing varsity season. There are always team and player dynamics to consider, even in HS, so the coaches did not simply replace the old with the new, but arranged a scrimmage, in which the line I was on was judged against the returning line. We were clearly better, it was obvious to everyone, and except for one returning OT, we replaced the "vets" and went on to have a nice season.
I would hope that MDA is conducting such scrimmages as we speak. Put up the young guys against the vets, and if they hold their own, start giving them minutes. MDA and Walsh have 3 days to decide where this team is going, IMO.
Based on yesterday's post game press conference, MDA is clearly taking things hard, and may be heading toward clinical depression. Guys he thought would step up- Lee, Duhon, Harrington, have not, and his promising young vet-Chandler, is still suffering the effects of his injury, or simply not as good as they expected him to be.
In the 2011-12 season, the only guys from this team who will definitely be here are Douglas, Gallo, and Hill. It is time to get those guys playing 30-35 MPG. I would also make sure that Landry and Chandler, get between 20-30 MPG every game, to see if they are worth keeping. If Chandler is still injured, give him a few weeks off, and let him rehab.
Hill should be starting at C, and Gallo should be getting 10-15 MPG playing at PF, which is where he is destined to play in this league. Douglas should be playing at least 20-25 MPG at PG.
If the above guys play the max MPG I suggest, there will be 85 MPG for everyone else-the minimum frees up 110 MPG. The rest of the minutes will be divided up any way MDA wants, between Hughes, Nate, Lee, Harrington, Darko, and Duhon. I don't care how these other minutes are apportioned. Jeffries should be used rarely, if at all, and Darko can play back-up for Hill.
If Curry somehow steps up, let him play backup C and see what he has left.
Walsh should now be actively looking to trade Lee, Harrington, and Hughes, who probably have the most trade value, to a veteran team looking for that final piece/"hired gun," or in the case of Lee, a young team who can benefit from a young vet. I would hope we could get a late #1 and a couple of #2s for them and take on some expiring contracts or even some young talent on an overstocked team. I have no illusions about the value other teams place on our players, though.
It is time to begin the transformation.
