At the beginning of the season, I really wanted this team to make a strong push for the playoffs. But now it is clear that this team is not going to be at that level. 1/10 of the season is over and we have only one win. It is time to change gears.
TD, Gallo, and Hill all look like solid prospects that can defend their position and score points, so that is our foundation.
It is time to trade Chandler (he is not a SG, nor a PF, so he becomes expendable with Gallo here), Lee, Nate, and Harrington for assets. A team like OKC has some cap room and needs PF and rebounding help. A trade of Lee to them for a second round pick and a prospect sounds good to me.
The same for Nate, who I would try to package with Jeffries or Curry and trade to Sactown.
Minny still needs a SF. I would offer Chandler, $3 million in cash, and a lottery-protected future 1st round pick (one of those deals where we give them the pick in 2012 if 20 or higher, 2013, if 15 or higher, 2014 if 10 or higher, 2015 if 5 or higher, 2016 unprotected) for Rick Rubio. Chandler would give them a starting SF, and in two years, if not sooner, we will have our PG of the future.
Harrington may be harder to move without taking back salary, so he may need to stay. The same is probably true for Curry unless he plays well over the next few weeks. If that happens, I would trade Curry for an expiring and a second round pick.
Bottomline, Walsh try to accumulate as many cap-friendly assets (draft picks) that you can and move Jeffries and Curry ASAP. Forget about trying to win games. The plan is to have enough money for two max FAs, and rebuild with TD, Gallo and Hill, plus whoever we get in the draft next year. Hopefully, if we can sign Bosh, Lebron will follow. Otherwise, signing Amare or Bosh, plus a Joe Johnson would be a good start. Even if we don't sign any FA, we can sign some minor players to fill in the gaps and try again in 2011, with Gallo, TD, and Hill getting another season playing starters minutes.
