Jamal Crawford is on course to finally break his ignominious streak of playing more NBA games without ever making the playoffs (604).

Crawford's Hawks, which won 47 games last season, are 6-2 after last night's 114-101 win over the Knicks at the Garden. But Crawford believes that steak would have ended for him last season if Knicks team president Donnie Walsh didn't trade him and Zach Randolph last Nov. 21 in the name of 2010 cap room. The Knicks were 6-5 when the deals were made. They went on to finish 32-50 season. The Knicks still haven't recovered, talent-wise and are still without a go-to guy who wants to take the big shot -- Crawford's staple.

"Yes, we would've made the playoffs last year," Crawford said. "I think [39] wins was the playoffs. We would've gotten in."

Crawford admits to being disappointed at the trade because the Knicks were finally winning. He wound up in a horrible situation and warred with Warriors coach Don Nelson.

"Last year was the best start in the last 10 years," said Crawford, who spent four-plus seasons in New York. "My only regret was that I was here through the roughest times, I wanted to be here for the good times. That's what bothers me the most."

Crawford said he is friends with LeBron James, whom he has known since James was in high school and Crawford was a Bull. James would come from Akron, Ohio, to Chicago to work out at a prestigious gym frequented by NBA players.

If the Knicks get James, it would be partly because Crawford's pact was off the Knicks' books. But he's not sure either James or Dwyane Wade would consider coming to a loser. The Knicks were in danger last night of tying their worst start in history.

"Honestly, I wouldn't say they have to make the playoffs," Crawford said. "They just have to compete. Both those guys are on really good teams right now. It would be tough for them to leave that."

Crawford also doesn't think Joe Johnson, the Knicks' fallback choice, is coming.

"He's staying with us," Crawford said with a smile.

Crawford does acknowledge a 25-win season will turn off free agents.

"I don't think it helps them at all," Crawford said.

Crawford said he spoke to James after his visit to New York last Friday.

"I'll keep that conversation private," Crawford said.

Now that he is out of Golden State, Crawford is ecstatic, even as a sixth man.

"This is the most excited I've been since high school when I won a championship," Crawford said. "This is a ball. Everybody's close to everybody. Everybody knows their roles."

That can't be said about the Knicks, who made another lineup change -- their fourth in nine games. Rookie Toney Douglas, off his spectacular 21-point showing vs. Utah, started at shooting guard, playing alongside Chris Duhon. Larry Hughes was benched.

Crawford admitted the current cast is talent-thin. Nate Robinson, Crawford's high school teammate in Seattle, sat out again with a sprained ankle, missing his sixth straight game. Crawford's buddy, Eddy Curry, practiced Wednesday for the first time since Day 1 of training camp.

"I know [coach Mike] D'Antoni will have them competing, they'll always play hard," Crawford said. "But until guys like Nate and Eddy get back together, it's going to be pretty tough. They're 1-7 but they're competing every night."

Crawford can't wait until late April.

"I've always said the thing that bothers me most about that streak is I never actually played in the playoffs," Crawford said. "It's not the streak. It's that I haven't participated. God willing, everybody stays healthy, I'll have the chance this year."

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

but this isn't something we didn't know. the whole point was to get rid of those two guys, zbo and craw, so that we can get some real players.

we could've made the playoffs with them, maybe, for the next 5 years, but we would've lost in the first round every time. it's fools' good. i'd rather go 5-77 this season then have a 'playoff season' with craw and zbo.

Craw and Zach forget we faced teams that were all having a tough time with injuries. It was a light schedule at that. They also forget they started bombing in their own special ways when we dropped 2 in a row to end up 6-5. They also forget our schedule was getting tougher.

Anyone who thinks we were going to win 40 games and make the playoffs had forgotten the past. It was not going to happen.

We went on a 6-5 run at some point in just about every season in the past 6 years. What did our records end up? Exactly.

say what u want about Jamal & his bad shot selection & lack of defense, but we haven't had a go to guy in crunchtime that could create his own shot & deliver in the clutch like him since he was traded... y'all told me Nate would be able to fill that void, but he really hasn't.

i'm not lamenting that Jamal's not a Knick, but that is definitely an area of weakness we have yet to address... we need a go to guy that can get off his own shot when everything else breaks down.

After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

no man, we might still scratch 40, i'm not giving up, but i'm saying if 5 wins this season was an alternative to a craw/bo 'playoff season', then i would be fine with that too.

Seriously this is looks like a 15-20 win season. All this creating of cap space and the Knicks may shoot ourselves in the foot by making the team itself so unattractive that nobody who wants to win will touch them.

oohah

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

a couple of awesome moves in the offseason, or maybe during the season, and everything can change. donnie lurks in the shadows waiting to pounce.

i think we should see a nice win streak develop soon...they're starting to get it.

If the Knicks had made the playoffs last year, the whole team could have been turned over for better assets. The players would have been seen as more valuable.

Winning = good things.

no way because they would've made the playoffs a mess, like that one marbury season. who wants that, that's gold for foolishers.

Who cares what he thinks? The right decision was made. We will have tons of cap space and if we can somehow climb out of this hole and start playing better by the end of the year, getting good ball from our young core, then I see no reason we can't get FA's to sign. For one thing it's easy to say no right now, cuz there's no money on the table and these players don't know how serious their own team is to keep them yet. How far will their own team go to keep them?

Hey guys...only my 2nd post here but I've been lurking and love the site

On to topic :)

Donnie Walsh actually admitted the same thing end of last season. Said that the Zach and JC trades likely did cost them a playoff berth. That said, it made sense to sacrifice in the short term in order to return to a state of fiscal responsibility

the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

We had to dump Zach and Craw's contracts. That's a given. If it made us worse, that's something that the team has to live with until they can work through it. Maybe he's right in saying that we would have made the playoffs, but the point is that we weren't going anywhere in the playoffs with that lineup.
