Or maybe D'Antoni or confidence and shooting....or hey let's pick an all time team :-)
I've seen some knock down, cold blooded, feed them the ball players in my time. I've watched Pete Maravich, Kareem, Olajuwon, Ron King, Bird and Magic, Kobe, Lebron many more. Some could/can nail it from anywhere on the floor. Some were/are just unstoppable when inspired and the ball in hand. But most amy player in the NBA has had nights like that. High School and college.
On any given night it is plausible for most any experienced player to go off. Just nail everything. By the time you reach the NBA level how many times including practice has a player put the ball in the net? A million?
I submit that the margin that separates someone like say Larry Hughes from Dwayne Wade is very small as far as skills. The biggest difference is confidence. In youself and your teammates. Confidence in the gaame plan and your coaching.
For guards not everyone can go out and just nail the first shot of the night from behind the arc. Rhythym or no rhythym. Personally I did better after I had made a couple from further in. I would use the glass and a hook to get a foul or bank shot if I had to. I never was much good from the top of the arc...good from the corners though.
D'Antoni stopped practice in summer league to bless TD out for passing up an open look after he had missed one. From watching Douglas the last 3 years...he never was a dead on 3 point shooter every night. Some nights he had only 2-3 fall from the field. Still he would score ~20 points a game. By drawing fouls. Driving or in close with a jumper. Gallanari might be a knockdown shooter. He seems to have a nicely developing skill set, a high bb IQ and the confidence. Confidence is a huge part of a shooters game.
D'Antoni on Gallinari "He's the best shooter I ever saw" result ..slump. Too much too soon and in the pre-season yet.
On Douglas "he's not the best shooter in the world" -_- STFU!!! Insanely negative. Accentuate the good things. The rest will come. This fellow was the ACC's leading scorer last year. And saw double teams on many nights. There are many ways to score points.
Finally I never see a player in game sitting next to D'Antoni. I don't see him giving instructions to players before they take the floor. The only time I recall him talking to players is during time outs.
For me...with the 'All Time' game on the line and needing points team these clear cut choices.
Kareem -Center
Dave Cowens-PF (Yeah I get to move him to PF)
Bird-SF
MJ -SG
Magic PG
Bill Simmons on Tyreke Evans
"The prototypical 0-guard: Someone who handles the ball all the time, looks for his own shot, gets to the rim at will and operates best if his teammates spread the floor to watch him."
