I think its closer to 7$mm

He had a good run with Washington, mostly as a defensive role player. He did a lot of the dirty work for Arenas and Jamison etc.

Isiah thought "gee.. we could use a guy like that."

Only problem is instead of Arenas or Jamison we got JJ, and why offer a 2-3 year deal when you can offer 5????

Without those extra years Jeffries would have taken Washington’s offer.

I have to admit, in the face of djsunyc’s protests, I was for acquiring Jeffries. I saw Jeffries as a net positive, bringing sorely needed defense, and thought the MLE was a fair contract for a starter on a playoff team. Of course turns out the length of the contract was pure folly.

When he got here, he started out the year injured and he played with a total lack of confidence from there on out. I think the situation in Washington was perfect for him. He could concentrate on his role as a defensive stopper, and didn’t have to try to do too much. He just never got on track in NYC.

I was with you. JJ isn't bad for the right price and on the right team. Unfortunately we were bringing him into a losing situation with a variety of misfits where his intangibles were useless. On a playoff team where he can rely on just playing defense and grabbing offensive boards he's not a bad bench guy

At the time we needed a "glue" guy when glue guys were all the rage. Plus he was an RFA, so Isiah gave him a max mid-level deal with trade kicker clauses that made it impossible for the Wiz to match. He gave us a front line of 6'11 guys which Isiah thought would win us a championship.

It would be interesting to know what the breaking point was for Washington; at what point they wouldn't have matched the contract.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Good deal, because I was for it as well. The problem isnt Jeffries, per-say, its the rest of the team. Jeffries sucks, but he has a great attitude and he works hard. Not everybody on the team has to be a 20 point scorer. A good team at least. He was good for Washington, but on a rudderless ship like NY he's an overpaid sore thumb.

Still hoping against hope that we can get his punk ass shipped out.

Hey, the old timer got Z-Bo's, Crawford and Q's contracts outta here. It's possible.

how about JJ/Hill/Chander for Okafor? That adds about $3mm to our payroll next year. Shimm's Hornets are a joke and he needs to save money, I think he might take a look at that.

Okafor is a joke too, no way I do that deal. That's one of the worst contracts in the league.

It is possible. Both he and Curry only have two years, so it is not like we would be asking a team to take on a huge financial burden. If we threw in $3 million and a second round draft pick, Walsh should be able to find some team to take on Jeffries. In fact, Washington might be the best place for him. Mike james is expiring and they need frontcourt depth more than they need another guard (Nick Young cannot even get run because they have so many 2s and 3s). Call them up, offer them $3 million and a second round pick and trade Jeffries for Mike James, who actually might help us.

Trust the Process

Just to clarify, Jeffries was an RFA the year Isiah made that offer, the Wiz gave Jeffries the Qualifying Offer. All indications were that Isiah was okay to give the other clauses that made the deal that much more unpalatable to the Wiz so they wouldn't match the deal (i.e. the trade kicker, the early termination option)-- and they didn't. At the time, Isiah was of the mindset that we wouldn't be under the cap in the near future anyway and that he should leverage the team's greatest resource-- the ability to outspend other teams.
You know I gonna spin wit it

Isiah's flavor of the month that June was defense. He outbid Washington for Jeffries and drafted Balk in the first round in a draft where he wasn't even expected to be selected in the second round.
