WASHINGTON (AP)—Los Angeles Clippers owner and real estate mogul Donald Sterling has agreed to pay a record $2.725 million to settle allegations by the government that he refused to rent apartments to Hispanics, blacks and to families with children, the Justice Department announced Tuesday.

The Justice Department sued Sterling in August 2006 for allegations of housing discrimination in the Koreatown area of Los Angeles. Other defendants were Sterling’s wife, Rochelle, and the Sterling Family Trust.

The defendants allegedly made statements to employees indicating that African-Americans and Hispanics were not desirable tenants.

In addition to the pro basketball Clippers, Sterling owns and manages 119 apartment buildings with over 5,000 apartment units in Los Angeles County.

“The magnitude of this settlement should send a message to all landlords that we will vigorously pursue violations of the Fair Housing Act,” Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the civil rights division, said in a statement.

That comes to $540 per unit.

Food for thought: was the fine large enough?

What is the average cost to repair an apartment to a "bad" tenant on average?

This can't help the Kkklippers sell tickets.

Koreans live there too... but in my area there were predominantly Latinos, & the Latinos & Koreans were always cool with each other... it was just those damn blacks & Greeks that we had an issue with.

What could stern say about the suit which started in three years ago? I doubt that Sterlings real estate companies are directly related to the Klippers so what can he say?

This is not like Knicks who were sued by Anucha whom both were employed by an NBA franchise. THen stern can say somthing.

Discrimination in the NBA would be a totally different matter.

and vick's dog stuff were directly related to the falcons? ok - that's a bit extreme but the nba can make an issue out of it, if they want.

but nobody with any type of clout has said anything. it's a shame...and none of their players will b/c he's signing the checks.
