Just so much tempting material to go after there, but "Diamond in the rough"?
Does the drafting in the top ten two years in the row now equate to looking for diamonds in the rough now?
I think you misunderstand the Gallo critics. I know you misunderstand me.
Gallo is not a bad player, not at all. It is that so far, he's a niche specialist. You don't draft that type of player that high with all of the talent that came after him. Trade down and take Gallo or just don't take him that high. It doesn't make sense.
Gordon, Randolph, McGee, Lopez... I've said it a million times already, there are a bunch more guys who could have filled major holes for us, and are more all-around players than Gallo.
Gallo may end up scoring 25 a game, but he's a flawed player. You saw that in the Charlotte game where Graham drove on him. D'Antoni said he was afraid to put him in the game for fear that he would be isolated on a play like that. See, you can't have that from your lotto pick. Not when there are so many other guys you're deciding not to pick.
Look at Nate and Lee... they are immensely skilled at particular things, and are problematic for us in others. They were drafted in the middle and the end of the draft respectively. If you draft a guy top 10 and he turns out to be Jason Kapono, that doesn't mean you had a good draft. Know what I mean?
Gallo is good, but we probably should have maneuvered to take him more towards the middle of the draft. Its about maximizing your assets. Its not a knock on a player who's doing his best to get the team wins right now.
...Now, if he shoots like he did last game every night out, then that's a different story. You have to see it though before you start watching the Knicks just for him like he's Michael Ray Richardson or something.
At least he's producing. That's half the battle for Walsh. Now he's got to work on pieces that fit with him and Chandler, and MikeD has to work on taking advantage of what Gallo is doing. You saw flashes of double team defenders running at Gallo and a quick pass to Al Jr for an open layup. There needs to be more of that. If Gallo can't do this to the point where you can count on it, then Mike can't design plans around it, and we're going to lose a ton of games. Its all about consistency at this point.
Alan Hahn:
Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)
