Rajon Rondo(notes) will not sign a contract extension with the Boston Celtics, allowing him to join next summer’s heralded free-agent class, the player’s agent told Yahoo! Sports late Monday.

Rondo and the Celtics have until Saturday to negotiate an extension, but his agent, Bill Duffy, said the point guard has already made a decision to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Duffy said he has had recent talks with the Celtics about Rondo, but the negotiations never progressed enough to lead him to believe the sides were close to a deal. Celtics president Danny Ainge couldn’t be reached for comment.

“We’re not going to do an extension right now,” Duffy said. “The conversation has been cordial. We’ve been talking the last couple of weeks. There is a difference between the perception of him in their eyes and our eyes. With that being said, the focus is on Rajon to have a fantastic season and concentrate on winning a championship.”

this can't be good for boston's championship aspirations. remember all those trade stories from around the draft? sounds like they might have been true.

anyway, he's the best PG on the free agent market next year. he'll get money from someone.

rondo and lebron and its game over for least next five years, knicks will win at least two chips, and be the team to beat for the chip. imho this is what walsh meant when he said how quickly it is to load up in f.a. as apposed to drafting in order to be legit. both f.a. and drafting have their positive arguements. but if walsh can get these two in orange and blue, walsh wins.

The real question is why Boston won't resign this kid?

He likly is asking for max money and he is very immature from what I have read.

Im thinking Boston is being smart as not to invest in a commodity like that as he is the next generaion player to still be around when the big three age out in two years.

If he wants the big money then I am sure he was fine with trade talk as boston was trying to accomidate him.

He'll be restricted so he will let the market determine his value. Smart for both parties to do this.

When is CP3 unrestricted?

I'm all for it. The man can play and is only getting better. Boston would be dumb to let him walk. He's the future even more than KG, Allen, Pierce.

It's a pipe dream but I hope Boston screws up.

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

2012 along with Dwight Howard.

I'd love to have Rondo but there's no way the Celtics don't match any offer we give them. Also remember, he's not a max player yet I guarantee I bet a lot of people will be praying we give him a max offer and hope he's the savior of the franchise.

Rondo is good but watch this kid Toney Douglas....no need to pay Rondo if Toney can do the job in house on that rookie scale.

No thanks. I'm not paying Rondo more than what the Celtic's think he's worth. Which is what we would have to do to get him.

Rondo is uber-talented but he's a complimentary piece. He's not a franchise guy. He's the perfect third or fourth option and maybe he'll progress into a legitimate second banana. But I wouldn't pay him franchise money.

Come on. Let's lower the bar just a little bit for Douglas.

Rondo was the alpha dog on the Celtics when KG left. He's a very good player. He'd be nice to target, except that you'd have to overpay him since he's an RFA.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Again, is anyone paying attention to the "Immature" label floating around on him?

His stock dropped in the draft and his team is reluctant!

With Ray, Kg and Pierce all alpha's Rondo is kept inline, but what is it about him?

I personally wouldn't want rondo and i think he isn't nearly as good when the "big 3" aren't there. he is perfect for that team but when he signs somewhere else, you will see he isnt that great. that is what might happen to ariza this year.
