USDA Confirms H1N1 in Minnesota Pigs

At least one pig from Minnesota has tested positive for the H1N1 virus, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Monday, the first case of a pig contracting the virus in the United States.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement that USDA officials have begun to reach out to U.S. trade partners and international organizations to emphasize that H1N1, also known as swine flu, cannot be contracted by eating pork products.

"We have fully engaged our trading partners to remind them ... that there is no scientific basis to restrict trade in pork and pork products," Vilsack said. "People cannot get this flu from eating pork or pork products. Pork is safe to eat."

The USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed the presence of H1N1 after an initial test suggested that as many as three pigs may have had the virus. USDA is continuing to conduct tests to confirm other potential positive tests from the pig samples.

lol we sharing the same tin hat on this one seb. this just springs up then bam vaccine instantly waiting in the wings-- maybe im just too suspect of drug dealers, legal or otherwise.

just consider the amount of coverage it's getting and then consider the type of coverage it is. it was on 60 minutes last night, very emotional, very fearful reporting. if someone is of lesser-mind, i can see how they would run to get the vaccine.

just to connect the dots same media who wants us to go crazy over this are the ones who debate whether we need a public option. country has needed a public option since aids first hit. these virus and diseases that cross contaminate needs a public universal health response not media sensationalism.

Tell 'em beans. America is a joke sometimes.

Finally its fair - pigs get their virus back.
