In response to the league's demands the wife of veteran NBA official wrote this letter to the National Basketball Referees Association executive board to provide a family's perspective. [Edited by - coolbeans on 10-17-2009 06:32 AM] coolbeans@in.com

Posted by coolbeans: This is a woman who does not know when to shut up. I work in an auto factory (Delphi Harrison, yes the bankruptcy one) and it was people like this made it hard on the rest of us over the past few years. Just the fact that she says the families of the refs have "sacrificed" more than the players is ludicrous. Just from that perspective, I don't want to generalize, but I highly doubt that referees have some of the priorities during the "off season" that some players do such as media, charity, organizational appearances, etc., etc. Referees also don't make the news, except Timmy boy. Even boiling it down to family, I am sure if an NBA referee has a bad game or makes a mistake, lil' nba referee doesn't have to worry about hearing it at school the same way as Player X's kid if he screws up or misses a big shot. Speaking in a more general term, and this is from experience, when you start to resort to saying "well, we sacrifice more than..." it means you don't sacrifice enough. I would love, LOVE to hear how this woman could justify a generalizing statement like that. Sorry I may be over reacting but I have been through something like this before and he more people that talk, the more complicated it gets-especially through the media. I am sure the referees do sacrifice but this is about the refs, there is no need pull other classifications of employees into it. ~You can't run from who you are.~

Posted by joec32033:Posted by coolbeans: Totally agree. The players' get it the worst. Now I will agree that a refs' life is probably worse than a normal NBA employee, but this lady is way off base in her claims. The bottomline, the NBA wants to get refs salaries under control and the refs don't like it. But unlike the players, the refs have less leverage. You cannot replace a Lebron or Kobe. BUt you can replace Ed Rush or any of hte other veteran refs. The refs better hope this thing is resolved before the replacement refs finally figure out how to competently ref a NBA game.
