Camp officially started tonight

Those tired legs got their spring back. The blood was pumping and the sweat was dripping. Mike D'Antoni let the dogs loose in Friday night's scrimmage here at Skidmore College and these guys got after it in a heated run that was the most entertaining segment of camp so far.

Nate Robinson has been letting everyone know how successful his squads have been in the scrimmages so far and it seemed Chris Duhon had heard enough. Duhon looked terrific running the blue squad and played with very noticable intensity. At one point, after excellent ball movement resulted in a three-pointer by Jared Jeffries -- no, that's not a typo -- and sent Robinson's white team to the sidelines in the "knock-out" format, Duhon barked to Robinson, "Go get some water! Go get some water and watch us play!"

Shortly after that, Duhon was about 10 feet off the three-point line and buried the long-range bomb from straightaway to send the gray team off. Before the shot, Robinson suggested Duhon was too deep to take the shot.

After he drained it, Duhon growled, "Don't worry about how deep I am!"

It was an impressive run for Duhon, who ran the blue team with a floor general's authority and worked very well with Danilo Gallinari at the two spot (yes, the two spot). The best lineup for the blues included a huge group of Gallinari, Jeffries, Lee and Milicic. That group moved the ball beautifully and seemed to have great chemistry at both ends of the floor. Milicic ran the floor well and, along with Lee, dominated the boards.

Milicic had a rough go, however. He pulled himself out of the scrimmage early on and saw a trainer, but got back into the game without any sign of trouble. Then in a battle with Toney Douglas he fell to the court and Douglas fell over him and landed on his head. He was down for a few seconds, but eventually got up and was fine.

Again, not to oversell it, but Jeffries has looked very good in camp. He is even finding some consistency and confidence in his previously wayward shot. Not to say he's a legit scorer, but Jeffries is trying hard to show he won't be a liability on offense.

The blue team's members weren't the only ones to stand out. Al Harrington seemed to set the tone for the scrimmage early on by bringing a serious competitive nature. Big Al knocked down open shots, competed on the boards with ferocity and even attempted taking a charge. He was whistled for a block by one of the local referees hired for the scrimmage and Harrington got up furious at the call.

The intensity never got out of hand, nor did it seem to be on the verge of it. Just a good, hard run that was entertaining and encouraging.

The team will have one practice tomorrow before Sunday's preseason opener against the Nets in Albany at 2 p.m. The game is on MSG Network.

* * *

* - Milicic doesn't accept the label of a lottery bust who hasn't lived up to being the No. 2 overall pick in the 2003 draft, which included LeBron James (No. 1), Carmelo Anthony (No. 3), Chris Bosh (No. 4), and Dwyane Wade (No. 5): "I didn't ask nobody to be the second pick," he said. "I didn't fight for this spot. [The Pistons] wanted me to be the second pick. They saw me at 7-foot, could shoot, run, dunk, all this stuff. They saw all this stuff and they never used it."

D'Antoni's plan is to try to use as much of Milicic's talent as he can and Milicic says he already sees what type of role he can fill.

"There's a lot of scorers on this team, scoring is not a problem here," he said. "So I will try to help in other ways; try to rebound, try to block shots. All of this stuff is going to make this team better and get a couple of more wins, maybe for a playoff spot."

* - The team used Skidmore College's pool for some water training after the morning practice. Eddy Curry was in the diving pool with strength coach Greg Brittenham for his conditioning work while he lets the calf injury heal. Nate, of course, had the most fun in the pool and did a flip into the water. He then wandered over to the diving pool and walked out onto the lower board with wide eyes. Man you knew something spectacular -- and funny -- was bound to happen.

But athletic trainer Roger Hinds advised against it and Nate wisely obeyed.

MAN that was a good read. It seems that things are coming along well at camp. Seems like the players are in the right spirit to get things going this year. I'm very glad to hear that Milicic is getting in there and having success. Jared actually picking up his play is a good thing too, cuz if he has a role and shows improvement on offense, this guy just might be a good trading chip. I have ZERO confidence that we'll be able to move Curry, but Jared is another story.

i been saying that camp is gonna be compeditive. there is a lot of talent out there and guys have pride. they see a guy that might be good enough to take him outta d'antoni's rotation...thats not gonna fly with alot of guys on expiring contracts. awesome....man i wish I was there to see.

Duhon talking ****??? sounds good to me...I just hope he brings his balls from day 1 and to me day one is oct 4th in the first pre-season game....its all good to pop **** to Nate cuz he's your annoying little brother...but lets bring it to Devin Harris.

Just a little footage & a couple of interviews with Darko & D'Antoni. I wish it had all the stuff Alan Hahn wrote about - Duhon getting fired up and talkin' crap to Nate, etc.. - but it's still good. Tommy Dee's been doing an excellent job. I can't wait to see them Sunday.

we've seen this from Jefferies every prior camp - everyone starts gushing about him, and then wham! Freak Injury.

Just wait for it.

Here's the take from "Posting and Toasting"

After a relatively mellow morning practice, the evening scrimmages at day 4 of Knicks training camp in Saratoga were among the best I've seen. Skidmore faculty were invited into the gym and permitted to bring their kids (there was a Q&A session with the rookies post-practice), so a particularly large and engaged crowd was at hand. A number of Knicks seized the opportunity to impress, and the games got pretty intense pretty fast. Some notes:

- The main instigators of what became a pretty heated battle were Nate Robinson and Chris Duhon. Robinson's squad (which was pretty much him and the youngsters) hit a little run of success, with Nate and Toney Douglas taking turns at the point and running show on both ends of the floor. After some posturing and trash talk from Nate (naturally), Du just lost it. He'd been typically mild-mannered for all of camp, but absolutely hit the ceiling tonight. It was great. Duhon and his blue squad (Hughes, Darko, Chandler, and Lee) immediately got to work, with the energized point guard directing traffic, screaming at refs, and even giving his own Gladiator-like speech to anyone who'd listen during a break in play ("Go get a drink, then come watch us play!). Du's masterpieces of the evening, though, were a couple of his signature downtown bombs. Despite discouragement from assistant coach Kenny Atkinson, Chris spotted up from about 30 feet out, and hit nothing but net, assuring the crowd that he could hit it "from the bus" if he wanted to. He hit another deeeeep one in scrimmage and a bunch afterward just to prove his point.

- Adding to the excitement was an especially active Al Harrington, who continued to abuse every defender in his path (and a ref or two as well). I believe the word that Al's added muscle over the summer, because he's willing and able to bully his way to the basket and finish strong. The outside shots are falling, too.

- Brace yourself. Jared Jeffries has been one of the best players on the floor throughout camp. I'm serious. It was cute at first, but Jared made it clear tonight that he's determined to be a factor. His outside shots continued to fall, and he put the ball on the floor for difficult finishes with either hand. On the other end, Jeffries hounded guards in the backcourt, then raced back to legitimately swat a few people under the basket. My friend (a Celtics fan, I'm afraid, but he appreciates the Knicks) said, without a hint of sarcasm, "he looks like Kevin Garnett out there". It was a sight to be seen.

- Toney Douglas continues to impress me on defense. As an athlete, he's unspectacular, but he's determined to bust his ass to stay with his assignment. It's especially refreshing to see someone get over a screen now and then.

- Both Darko Milicic and Jordan Hill continued to run the floor nicely, though neither can seem to find their outside shot. For Jordan, it's a matter of squaring himself with confidence and not hesitating (aka Channing Frye Syndrome). For Darko, it seems like more of a tiredness issue. The big fella was winded enough to actually call for a sub this evening. All that said, I think both are ready to run pick and rolls all season long.

- I think I buy the idea of Danilo Gallinari acting as a shooting guard on offense, but I'm not so down with his matching up that way on D. Gallo matched up with Nate Robinson and Marcus Landry (the latter of which isn't nearly as ridiculous, but still) at times, and had trouble keeping up when he got screened or lost on the break. At one point, a frustrated Gallo objected to some physical positioning by Landry, and simply shoved him out of bounds with two hands. The guy's got fire, but I wonder if throwing him out there against guards maximizes his talents.

- A little kid sitting behind me remarked that Nate Robinson looks like Terrell Owens. I was ready to shred that racist little six year-old punk to bits in this space, but you know what? I kinda see it.

- Line of the night goes to one of the refs who, witnessing the crowd's excitement during a break in play, announced "IT'S ON NOW!" to everyone in his immediate vicinity.

That's it for now, folks. The last practice is mid-day tomorrow. You can look forward to a little bit of interview footage (today's were a lot of fun), some nice photos, and some closing notes from me. As far as scrimmage video goes, look no further than The Knicks Blog. I'm going out now. Have a good one.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Yea mman, I hate the soap opera drama that the Knicks bring for whatever reason. It's like, we're either good and it's b-ball or we're bad and it's soaps, there is no inbetween in NY.
WE AIN'T NOWHERE WITH THIS BUM CHOKER IN CARMELO. GIVE ME STARKS'S 2-21 ANY DAY OVER THIS LACKLUSTER CLUSTEREFF.
