Hey I was reading this Knicks puff piece on Darko and I must say that I was impressed with his attitude. I really have a good feeling about this guy. He also looks like he's in Great shape. Look at that picture of him.

http://www.nba.com/knicks/news/09trainingcamp_milicic.html

Once considered one of the most interesting international prospects in years as a 17-year-old out of Serbia, Darko Milicic found himself on the bench through his first three NBA seasons with the Pistons before spending the past four years playing limited reserve roles with the Magic and Grizzlies. Now, the former No. 2 overall pick has an opportunity to fulfill his potential here in New York with the Knicks.

“All these bad experiences made me kind of lose confidence,” Milicic said. “I’m not going to say I lost the love for the game, but the confidence was a little bit lost during those first years of not playing. I thought, ‘Why am I here when I’m not playing?’

“Not playing for a long time just doesn’t help you at all. When you get in a game after those kinds of years it’s tough because things happen in the game that have never happened to you before so you’re kind of lost and you’re trying to find yourself.”

Milicic will now be looking to find himself in New York, where he is widely considered a perfect fit for Mike D’Antoni’s up-and-down system. He is a thin, athletic big man who can run the floor well. Unfortunately, he's been stuck in more halfcourt sets throughout his seven-year career, playing mostly with his back to the basket.

While the 7-foot Milicic can knock down the midrange jumper, he sees himself in more of a defensive role with the Knicks but will do whatever he needs to in order to get on the floor. He will be competing with David Lee, Jared Jeffries, Al Harrington, Eddy Curry and rookie Jordan Hill for frontcourt minutes, which could be difficult to come by as D'Antoni tends to only play eight or nine players per game.

“I’m hoping for the best, you know,” Milicic said, “and I’m focusing on trying to show the coach that I want to play and that I want to be part of this team.

“I will help this team in any way. It doesn’t matter what it is. You see there are a lot of players who can score, so scoring is not a problem on this team. I’m going to try to block shots, try to play up on the ball and all the other stuff that is going to make this team become a winning team and a playoff team.”

The Knicks main offseason major acquisition was Milicic, who was obtained from Memphis on draft day in exchange for guard Quentin Richardson. For Milicic, it was a dream come true when he received the call that he was dealt to the Knicks.

“I dreamed to be part of the New York Knicks at the beginning of my career," he said. "I think every player wants to be part of the New York Knicks. This is a big organization, a big team, and I love New York. I’m glad to be here.”

But before he could get here, Milicic had a very busy offseason in Serbia. Not only did the 24-year-old get married, but he and his wife, Zorana, celebrated the birth of their first child. “I still had time to workout,” he said. Milicic and his family arrived in New York last Friday.

D’Antoni listed Milicic as one of the team’s question marks entering camp and stopped short of saying he’ll get something out of Milicic that the four other coaching staff’s he has played for couldn’t, but it appears now is the perfect time to put him to the test.

“You see his potential,” D’Antoni said. “He’s in a good spot because he just got married, he just had a kid, he’s 24, he speaks great English now and he’s comfortable in America. Sometimes you get guys right at the right moment.”

Both Milicic and the Knicks are hoping that right moment is now.

when somebody talks about confidence or a lack thereof, in professional sports, its a wrap.

If he starts out slow or hits a rut in NY he is going to get swallowed alive and we will be personally reminded why he is one of the biggest busts in sports history. He's not a bad person, its just that his personality conflicts with the high stress and high expectation world of the NBA.

Pray for his soul in NY.

In this case i'd have to disagree somewhat. I think Darko was brought in way too early and then he got lost on Detroits bench. it was a horrible situation for a young foreign born player to come into. The guy wasn't referring to the last 4 yrs but his 1st 3 in Detroit.

If you look at his stats you can see that he really hasn't had a lot of opportunity. Avg'ing 7 shots a game isn't much of a chance to get something going. The guy should be given a shot to touch the ball more and make some plays. Just touching it in the offense even if just to make a pass tends to help a player to succeed. He's got some talent which has never been in question. He defends well and we know he can block shots. He's in WAY better shape than Curry. I'd give him every opportunity to succeed if I was MDA. Darko already has at least the base skills of a help defender and a guy that can make a pass and set a pick. He's fit enough to run the floor and he clearly didn't just let himself go this summer while he was getting married and having his 1st child.

I have to agree with a sports writer who said today that Darko didn't ask to be the 2nd overall pick in his draft class..

who cares what he asked for? He was offered it, he took it, and he's been a world class bum.

C'mon now, in six years duke hasnt averaged more than 8pts a game in this league or more than 6 rebounds. Why he get a pass? Thats barely second-round pick production let alone second pick in the whole draft.

When one doesnt believe in his or herself it informs everything about them; Especially their physical being: body language, effort, pretty much all of their natural abilities. They cant overcome the mental hurdles.

I mean if we're going to talk about Eddy Curry this and Eddy Curry that, then we've got to be real here. Cause Eddy Curry's career looking like Wilt compared to this cat and Eddy is talked about like dog shyt around here.

I'm not trying to hate. I hope he can get it together. Just spitting facts.

darko cost us nothing. and by that you know q was nothing.

eddy cost us 2 lottos, a buttload of money, maybe a shot at a second free agent in '10, and a whole lot of self-esteem as a franchise.

there's simply no comparison.

Well Darko didn't have anywhere close to the opportunity to get going that Eddy had. Larry Brown is murder on rookies, much more so a 17 yr old European prospect. Let's not forget that this guy was scouted during the time when GM's lost their minds projecting what these guys could be in hopes of landing the next Dirk. Darko hadn't really done anything yet. He was all potential.

Now we know that he wasn't the player they projected him to be, but the real Darko is a decent player that can help a team. He's still young! 24 is not ancient and aside from last year, he was starting to get his act together a bit. The teams he's been on have been tough situations to succeed. In Orlando at least he had a solid role and he seemed to do a good job.

If Darko can spell DLee effectively he would at least get a chance to develop and maybe one day get to point where he might take over the starting job. I would much rather have a real big like him in there but for now just having a shotblocker off the bench to spell Lee would help a good deal. This offense presents all the players with optimal opportunities to succeed. It's just the nature of the offense, so I fully expect that Darko will be able to fit in and excel more than he has in other systems.

What was he suppose to do, say" no thanks I'll wait til the 2nd round where I'm much more comfotable"

There's no denying it's been a struggle for him,but he actually got beyond his rookie contract, so I hope he turns into a billups type who was a late developer, and just needed the right place and time.

My intention wasnt to derail this thread into an Eddy vs. Darko deal.

I understand there is more emotional investment involved with Eddy over Darko, so the feelings are naturally harder around here But the only reason why I invoked Eddy is because there is way more reason to be optimistic about Eddy rather than Darko given their careers.

Just looks dumb to talk about how excited you are for a guy that has averaged about 5 pts in the league and in the same breath relentlessly dog somebody who has averaged about 14 pts.. Regardless of the circumstances.

I understand you doggy, but at the same time Billips was at least pretty good-to-solid before he blew up in Detroit under the right situations.

The only reason Darko is still in the league is because he was a number 2 pick and GM's keep hoping against hope. Micheal Doleac looks down on his career so far.

That is a pretty honest article on Darko, and his words are honest. I read a review of this book, The Outliers, which talks about success, and how we spend too much time on thinking about what successful people are as opposed to the environments that made them successful. Or something like that. I won't read the book because i feel i've gotten enough out of it already with this post. But it makes me think of darko. Just imagine, a different team, a different system, whatever, when he came in?? Wraps, definitely a cut above Dirk in raw potential. But sometimes the ball doesn't roll the right way or the rolling stone hits a curvature and snaps off, hits a tree, or something. At 24 let us just hope that he can put the past behind him, grasp this opportunity, and develop as if he were fresh in the league without any regard to his Larry Brown destructive years.

I know you always trying to be silly and whatnot but a whole lot of balls didnt roll the right way for him to only have averaged 5 pts a game in six years. Man, I could go out there, put on some sneaks, and do that.

Cut me a break, my reply was as honest as Darko's; i don't have a lot of time for silly.

It's very foolish to look at a career and say, oh, he averaged 5 points a game in 6 years. That's foolish, what the heck? Look at the nuances, look at the environment, and consider good ol' LUCK. You know, what if Bill Gates didn't have access to a whatever at that whatever time, you see?

The thing I look at is that this guy works hard to stay in that type of shape, that alone should tell you about his commitment. How easy would it have been for him to have taken the Curry route while he was in Detroit? He could have been a fat, overweight slob by now with little or no motivation. Instead he is lean, fit and a good defender. Let the man breathe and stop holding him to what was expected of him when he got drafted. Those expectation were not of his own making and this s a recurrent roblem with NBA fans in my opinion. Evaluate the guy for what he does and what he can do, not for what some delusional scout wrote about him 6 years ago.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

Agree 100%...as a testament to, if nothing else but psyche, he continues to stay in shape and stay ready to rock and roll. This mgiht have something to do with his age but also his demeanor, and also correlates closely to his potential, i believe. I've seen lazy 24 year olds. I used to be one myself, and now I still struggle to not-be-lazy. Darko is not lazy, which is often times worth more than the raw IQ, or the raw athleticism, itself. So darko is like a fresh man, he has fresh slate. 24, that's a young kid, what age did Kukoc get in the league with??

Well, first of all, weight and effort arent always a direct correlation. I eat like a fool and I dont gain a pound, while all another person has to do is even look at a steak and they start ballooning.

And havent we always looked at rebounds around here as statement on hustle and desire? Well whats good with Darko's rebounding numbers? At least Eddy can make the excuse that he concentrates almost exclusively on the offensive end which he has largely excelled at. What the hell is Darko doing out there on the floor as a seven-footer for all these years?

With Darko its..."well his career has been a waste because the stars weren't aligned right, and the situation was wrong, and his beds were made improperly"...ext. I mean, c'mon Eddy had his infant daughter and the wife of his child murdered and its like: "so what, get out there and produce you fat slob".

1. sure they are. if you're prone to gaining weight more easily than someone else, than it stands to reason you would work harder to keep the weight off. no effort on curry's part. and, as a person with a high metabolism (or somethin'), i challenge you to say the same thing about your eating habits in another 10 years; catches up with anyone if you're not careful.

2. I don't even need to look at the stats on the second one, because Curry has veraged, i'm sure, close to about 30 mpg for his career....Darko has fluctuated between 2 minutes and 15 in his....and STILL darko's rebounding numbers are very likely higher, per 48, than Currys.....I challenge the local stat guys to shine flashlight bulb onto this.

3. Did darko go out and get a woman pregnant to have an infant daughter with? Did darko go out and deal with unsavory elements of society which are almost guaranteed to lead a man of virtue into trouble? no.

edit: per 36m, darko averages 8.5 boards per, while Curry averages 7.5.

As usual you obviously have no clue what you're talking about.

So let me get this straight. Hard working, forthright, real man Darko is sitting on the bench with pine needles sticking out of his ass, while slovenly, no-account, pathetic Eddy Curry is out there on the court busting the ass of defenders down low. Got ya.

As far as the rest of your post, its more of the same worthlessness that I've come to expect from you. Karma's a bitch, tho. I'l tell you that.

No one said Eddy Curry was pathetic...i don't think it's a stretch to say that many fans would have likened Curry to a young Shaq in potential...Darko was never compared to Shaq. What makes Curry so frustrating is that he has already put up 20 points per game and 7 boards while not giving a crap, and what makes Darko so appealing is that he is obviously gives many craps and has the potential to reach 20 points and 12 boards...so i don't know what you're talking about, as usual, and what's up with the karma??

what's up with the karma??

U tell me?

It might have something to do with the suggestion that somehow Curry brought that tragedy upon himself, when no kind of evidence has ever surfaced to support that. But that sort of b.s has everything to do with Knick fans petty vendetta against Curry and thats weaker than weak.

Even if Curry was a sonofabitch he wouldnt deserve something like that, never mind the fact that by all accounts he seems like a nice, stand up guy. Go kick rocks fool.
