Same old story: Curry limps off the court

Eddy Curry almost made it through a full day of practice. The oft-injured center limped off the court tonight after straining his right calf. He was taken back to the training room by the Knicks' physical therapist Dave Hancock. Earlier in the day, after the Knicks' first practice on Tuesday morning, team president Donnie Walsh remarked it was the first time he had ever seen Curry go through a full practice. Apparently he spoke too soon.

The Knicks are trying everything - and anything - to improve the team's overall fitness. They hired a trainer for one week to monitor their heart rates and also to monitor the type of minerals they lose when they sweat. The monitor - sewn into the back of the players' practice jerseys - can determine which players are working hard and which players are not. But we don't need a monitor to know that right now Curry is in last place. ... Former Pacer Austin Croshere watched Tuesday's scrimmage with Walsh.

It's deja vu all over again: Curry's hurt

Whatever encouragement the Knicks drew from Eddy Curry lumbering up and down the floor rather well by his standards Tuesday morning were dashed Tuesday night when he limped off the floor after reinjuring his right calf.

The injury, which he dates back to last week when he said he tweaked it overcompensating for a left hamstring injury, is being called a "strain" by the team and he's to be re-evaluated on Wednesday.

Still, not even two practices into camp after he missed all of last year's camp with a stomach virus?

That's Jerome James territory.

What Frankie Ice didn't report is the fact that Curry is day to day and that he got the injury on a hustle play.
Also didn't mention that Curry will likely participate tomorrow in activities.
I love how certain people eat these stories up lol.
Makes me laugh.

curry burned 2 gm's...one wasted the #2 pick overall for him, the other one wasted the #2 and #9 pick on him...and neither gm is a part of the nba anymore...

I am sure one of those former gms would give anything to have the worst mistake of his tenure be the acquisition of Eddy Curry.

Trading 2 picks for Curry was about as bad a trade as you could get. Picks AND expirings.

If Curry does not play by Thursday, it will tell us all we need to know about him this season. A pulled calf is nothing and it is probably due to him not stretching correctly before practice. I have played through them on a number of occassions (shortly after they occurred) and if he can't push himself to play by Thursday, then he is just going to be another JJ1 and remain hurt for most of the season. Curry needs to learn to man up and play through minor injuries. Now is a good time for him to start.

And lessened the talent from mediocre to poor... which probably indirectly led to Rose getting drafted

here's the update:

Curry huffs, puffs ... and hobbles offBy MARC BERMAN

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- As predictable as Saratoga being the Mecca of horse racing every August, Knicks star-crossed center Eddy Curry pulled up lame last night at Skidmore College.

Curry's comeback took a disheartening turn when he strained his right calf during the first scrimmage of training camp while battling for a rebound, jeopardizing his availability for the rest of the week and casting an early pall on Camp Saratoga.

Coach Mike D'Antoni said he hopes Curry will return to practice in two days, but the 317-pound center historically is a slow healer. After playing just three games for a total of 12 minutes last season while battling knee and weight problems, Curry arrived at camp 40 pounds lighter, but apparently not light enough.

"I'm definitely frustrated but not discouraged," Curry said. "I don't think it's serious. I don't think it's anything to worry about too bad."

After ripping a rebound from David Lee, Curry made an outlet pass and hobbled off the court as play continued. Curry was met by trainers on the sidelines. After a few minutes, he limped to the locker room, missing the final hour of scrimmage. Curry later emerged with his lower right leg bandaged. Curry had gotten through the morning practice unscathed, but it was a light session without scrimmages.

"He'll be back in a couple of days, probably," D'Antoni said. "It's too bad. You go two-a-days, you risk guys not quite ready. I expect him to be back in a couple of days. He'll be back."

But missing these two-a-day sessions will set back Curry's progress further. D'Antoni blamed last season's nightmare year for Curry on him being bed-ridden in the hospital for the entire week of Camp Saratoga with a bacterial infection. Curry's the one player who can't afford to miss time.

It's now a question of whether he'll have enough practice time to be ready to play in the exhibition opener Sunday in Albany vs. the Nets."I strained it. We don't think it's going to be too bad," Curry said. "We're going to take it day by day and see how it goes and get a lot of treatment. I was feeling it ever since Thursday. I've been able to play and not push off it too hard. (But) I went up for a rebound and just kind of pulled it."

Despite his weight loss from an intensive offseason training program in Detroit, Curry still did not appear to be in NBA-game shape before the injury. But in the morning, Walsh seemed pleased.

"It's the first time I saw him practice fully since I've been here," Walsh said after the morning session.

Down to 317 pounds, Curry was still bending over, hands on knees, huffing and puffing during fastbreak drills in the morning, taking extra time before getting back in line.

"Camp will be good for him," D'Antoni said after the morning session. "He needs to get down a little bit."

A Curry transformation changes the complexion of what looks like another losing season. If Curry beats the odds and becomes a viable low-post center again as he turns 27 in December, he also can be another piece to attract LeBron James. But after what happened last night, that appears a pipe dream.

D'Antoni told the players during Monday night's meetings the goal is to be in the top 15 this season in defense, measured by effective field goal percentage (which includes 3-pointers). Last season, the Knicks ranked 28th out of 30.

Danilo Gallinari wore massive tape around his right hand during practice because of a cut, but his back -- and 3-pointer -- looked beautiful.

From Alan Hahn's Twitter Feed:

Curry will miss camp here in Saratoga for a second straight season. MRI reveals torn right plantaris muscle. Will miss 3-5 days.

The muscle is considered "vestigial", or one the body doesn't need. The time off will be to drain blood from the area.

The injury occurs most frequently during running or jumping and usually results from an eccentric load placed across the ankle with the knee in an extended position. Even though the injury is the result of an indirect mechanism, subjectively the patient may describe direct trauma to the calf region – often the athlete feels as though they were struck on the calf by an object such as a ball or piece of equipment.12 Depending on the severity, calf soreness may be experienced that may cause the athlete to stop play, or may simply be experienced throughout the remainder of the activity. This pain usually becomes more severe after resting or the next day.13 Accompanying the pain may be swelling that may extend down to the ankle and foot. Any attempt at active or passive dorsiflexion, and resisted plantarflexion with elicit severe pain.12,13

So... given that few players are in game shape at the start of camp, does the practice of pushing players to their limits on day 1 make a whole lot of sense? Look what we got now - as a result of pushing too hard, he's going to be set back by about a week.

Guys coming off injury... you've gotta slowly get them them up to speed.
