We know MDA isnt going to play more than 8 players during the season. I think the 8 will be Duhon, Chandler, Gallinari, Nate, Lee, Harrington, Jared, and Darko. I really dont see Hughes, douglas, hill and Curry getting much clock unless someone gets hurt. I really expect Gallnari to shoot the ball great and open up the pick and roll even more.

I think MDA will start the season using a 9 man rotation, not 8, because he has a lot of players who are pretty equal. And no one really commanding an overload of minutes. I agree with your 8 and I'd add Hughes. Curry is a B-I-G questionmark. Until I see him in camp, his size, and how he plays, I wouldn't want to evaluate him.

It really is the million dollar question. Actually there's quite a few questions:

(1) Does he commit to Curry & Jeffries early in order to showcase them, get their value up and then maintain that elevated value for a while at the expense of others?

(2) Does he find time for Jordan Hill, the 8th pick in the draft, on a lousy 32-win team from a year ago?

(3) Does Douglas get a chance to play (yeah Nate's back but he's not really a D'Antoni point guard - even with Nate playing big minutes last year, they still managed to burn out Duhon)?

(4) How does he handle Lee and Nate now that there's a pretty good chance they're not part of the future past this year? Do they still get big minutes?

(5) Does he extend the rotation a little in order to get Hughes in there (I wouldn't care too much about appeasing Hughes but he could make some waves if he doesn't play and could cause a problem like he did in Chicago, plus they're paying him a lot of money this year).

(6) They sound like they're high on Darko in this system - how much time does he get?

I can't wait to see what coach is gonna do. Looking forward to it though.

Curry, Lee, Harrington, Chandler, Gallo, Nate, Duhon, Darko, Jefferies or possibly Hughes but more likely Jefferies.

I'm thinking about a different mix and different numbers.

MDA is trying to get the Knicks to play his system. Often newer players will be more likely to do things his way, with veterans more set in their ways. I think Mike participated in choosing both Hill and Douglas and he saw something he liked in both. Both of these guys will play for Mike from the beginning. I look for Hill to contribute well because of his shot blocking ability, rebounding and mobility. I think Douglas plays the point and Nate plays shooting guard 6th man. That allows Mike to keep Nate from taking the Knicks out of Mike's system. I see Mike starting with the 10 players listed below and perhaps work his way down to 9 or possibly 8 depending on whether either Darko or Curry are capable of making valuable contributions longer term. If the other team is playing a taller shooting guard one night, perhaps Hughes might replace Nate in the lineup that night.

Duhon/Douglas @ PG
Chandler/Robinson @ SG
Galinari/Harrington @ SF
Lee/Harrington @ PF
Hill/Darko/Curry @ C

its going to be a VERY interesting camp.

Lee, Nate, Chandler, Duhon, Harrington and Gallo are the core guys and they wont have to compete very much for minutes. Coach knows what he's getting there and we know they are all good fits.

That leaves 2 more rotation guys and 1 guy (9th) who will see matchup type minutes.

Here is what I see:

Hughes: veteran ball handler and somewhat willing to defend keeps him an option. Horrific shot selection leaves coaches thinking they would rather take a kick to the balls then watch him jack up another contested 3.
Outlook: middle of the pack

Curry: Walsh's attention to getting him in shape this offseason indicates a desire to get him involved in some way shape or form. He can certainly score at a high rate and doesnt (cant play) a lot of minutes. DW is a very hands off GM historically but both he and MDA understand what it would mean if Curry could play his way into a trade out of town. He will get every chance and then some to play
Outlook: favorite

Darko: total wildcard. Might just collect his $7.5mm and enjoy the NY night life en route to playing overseas next year. Might be able to put those size and skills together into a breakout season. 24 years old isnt too late to do that.
Outlook: middle of the pack

Jared Jeffries: Saw some minutes last year with pretty bad results. So inept offensively its hard to see him getting a role. Sure, it would be nice to see him contribute and possibly have trade value but its just not going to happen. At 6'11 he's got a shot to see some matchup minutes but thats about it
Outlook: longshot

Jordan Hill: Good prospect and athletic but just isnt going to be ready to play at this level and in this offense. Might see some burn in garbage time but thats about it. Sit and learn rook
Outlook: longshot

Toney Douglas: Knicks spent $3mm to draft him for a reason. He can handle, he can lock down an opposing PG, he hit the college 3 just under 40% and his combine scores show he's one of the quickest players in the NBA. At 23 years old he got the maturity and skills to help out right out of the box
Outlook: front runner

Crawford, Hunter, Pruitt, Yue, Carter: Would take an amazing camp and preseason to get burn over the above guys, and even then its 9th guy type minutes.
Outlook: long shot

So I think Knicks look like this...
They start the game big:
Duhon
Chandler
Gallo
Lee
Curry
Then bring Nate, Harrington and Douglas off the bench to speed up the tempo and run up the score especially against other team's bench.

I think Duhon is kept fresh so his energy level is high in games

I think your crunchtime lineup is
Nate, Douglas, Gallo, Harrington and Lee (small)
or
Nate, Chandler, Gallo, Harrington and Lee (big, well bigger)

Basic eight of Duhon, Nate, Hughes, Chandler, Gallo, Lee, Harrington and Curry. Some minutes for Jeffries, Douglas and maybe Hill.

Unless Darko is totally out of shape, I think he plays in the rotation. He's the ONLY proven shotblocker we have. If he gets minutes he's gonna avg. 2 blocks a game. He's also got other skills that fit into our scheme. He's a better shooter than Curry and can pass better than Curry too. Curry is the better post player, but in this system that doesn't have much value. I could be wrong and maybe Walsh wants MDA to showcase Curry, but Darko seems a better fit for this Euro style offense and he's a better defender than Curry too!!!

kind of strange to have the 8th pick in the draft on a non-playoff team not play, but also a reality with curry & darko here.

i also think darko or hill are gonna get some minutes because i am guessing that they are not going to play eddy more than 30 minutes early in the year. i suppose we could see lee at the 5 again, but why draft hill and darko if they aren't gonna play?

i could see d'antoni going with 9 because of curry not really being a guy who they may expect to play big minutes.

my best guess is we'll see a rotation of 9:

duhon
nate
hughes
lee
gallo
harrington
ill will the mayor
curry
darko (unless hill shows he can play in training camp, i think darko has the edge)

a major question is can the knicks get away with not playing jeffries if they have hopes of moving him?

generally, i don't think he has a place in the rotation. i know he can defend, but we don't have a superstar out there to get away with playing 4 on 5 on offense.

as for douglas? i just don't see us benching hughes for him, unless he outplays hughes in camp by a pretty significant margin. a nice idea, but if we want to win as d'antoni is saying, is he really going to rely on a rookie as the main guard off the bench? down the road, assuming he stays, douglas will get his shot. hughes can also play pg or sg, and defend, so he is the front runner to me for the 3rd guard.

as d'antoni indicated today, we may play bigger lineups, (with hughes and gallo as pg/point forward) which may mean we are probably not going to have more than 3 guards in the rotation.

Ira, what about Darko?

Lee
Harrington
Chandler
Hughes
Duhon

Nate
Gallo
Darko
Jeffries

---That is our top 9.

From there I'm not sure what to say.

I doubt Hill or Douglas are guaranteed any playing time. I figure we'd try to force Curry in there some how to see if we can trade him. I would expect Jeffries time to drop drastically now as well.

Its funny you say that because I was just talking to a friend about how this is the first year in a very long time that I'm not pumped up for the season at all. Not that I expected much in the previous 7 years or so, but this year just feels like we are just going to play out the string and get to the real season....Summer '10...

Really? I started feeling that way about two years ago. At this point it's gonna take the team doing something interesting to get me interested again. Otherwise, who's got time to waste on bad basketball?

My shot at the rotation to start the year

Duhon --starting 1
Chandler --starting 2
Gallo ---starting 3
Al ---starting 4
Lee ---starting at the 5

JJ---no idea why I have him this high, but I think that his is the contract that could get moved and he might get a role early on in the season
Nate ---but on a very short string
Hill---think he will end up being the best big off the bench (not sure if that is good or not)
Douglas---I have high, high hopes---2nd team all-rookie

Those not getting much run:
Hughes--really have no good read on where he might fit
Darko--I hope he surprises me
Curry---hate to do it, but I think the body is just too broken down

Who else makes the team?
Not sure...

Just my two cents...can't wait for training camp and the preseason...should be interesting and fun.
Who will be in the 8 man this year?
