Well given that the Knicks and no one else is giving Lee $9 mill this summer, he obviously is going to sign the one year QO. One year at $7 mill is better than sitting out making $0 mill.

Knicks played it right here. If DLee keeps improving we'll have the space and flexibility to pay him next summer if we so choose.

this is a good move as it gives us options. if we're able to somehow trade jefferies or if the cap doesn't drop next summer, they can re-sign and still add a max guy.

What about the cap hold? The Knicks must renounce to his rights after next year to get that cap space. Isn't that practically waving him good bye?

Not necesarily. They won't need to renounce his rights to sign 1 max FA. They'll get their chance to decide if he's worth keeping first.

Ok, get me the facts, please. First of, if Lee signed a 9mill deal, what would be his cap hold? The Knicks expect to have cap room but it depends a lot on those cap holds. If they trade Curry AND Jeffries, things change as they would have a lot, probably enough to sign a max FA and keep Lee, but I wonder how true is that if they don't get to trade both of them.

Just asking, would like to understand this situation and feel better about the actions (mainly non-actions) my favorite team takes...

Knicks signing lee? I must say, this is a bold, exciting and risky move on the part of Donnie.

It gives the Knicks lots of options. They can trade him to a team at the deadline as an expiring with Bird rights. They can keep him and resign him next year, sign and trade him, or they can renounce him and gain the cap space. Other than a sign and trade, this was the best case scenario for the Knicks in my opinion.

Lee will have veto rights on a 1 year deal and will lose his Bird rights if he agrees to a trade.

how does that convince Lee to waive his Bird rights?

If as you said he would have to renounce his bird rights in a trade it would have to be a situation where a team was planning on signing him to an extension.

so why would that team give up anything for Lee mid-season if he'll be unrestricted anyway at season's end?

The Knicks would have his bird rights unless they renounce them. Just a question, what do you think Walsh should have done with Lee?

It doesn't appear that it is an option now. I don't know if there were any real offers at the deadline but he certainly has been available all summer.

The Knicks are expected to sign restricted free-agent David Lee to a one-year contract after the Labor Day weekend, according to officials familiar with the talks.

"We can't get a deal," Walsh said about a potential sign-and-trade for Lee.
