  • Lebron in summer 2010

  • CP3 in summer 2011

  • Nucleus still intact (Mayor, Gallo, TD, Hill)

  • Role players on board (Al "I'll Be Here" Harrington, Darko, +4 others TBD)

That right there is the makings of a contender.

Oh, definitely, man. We are witnessing the early stages of a contender. Look at how great we look.

That would be great but I am not sure about a nucleus that has a combined total of 400 minutes playing time in the NBA other than Chandler.

400 minutes, sure, but it's not like they haven't been shooting hoops their whole lives. This year is ripe for several breakouts. I am looking for breakouts from Gallo, Chandler, and Darko. Whatever breakout you can add to that is a great boost. What if Big Eddy breaks out? Or Duhon turns into Nash? You never know.

Looks great if it happens (LBJ + CP3).
I predict that by the end of the year, Toney Douglas becomes as good as Ramon Sessions and surpusses Seesions by adding a very good mid-range jumper + excellent perimeter D.

Chandler would need to be resigned in there somewhere. Nice pipe dream though.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

LBJ & CP3 are best friends (as far as NBA goes, meaning not incl. LBJ's entourage). They certainly want to play together, and why not do it on the biggest media stage in all of professional hoops?

I meant contender after CP3 on board. By then, that nucleus may have a couple of all-stars in it (e.g., Gallo, Mayor, TD, Hill - they all have wicked upside and short resumes right now)

Chandler on his first post-rookie contract wil be doable, even after signing LBJ & CP3. Those guys are the max deals, Chandler would presumably be worth a bunch, too. Guys who want to stay on the NYK with LBJ+CP3 running the floor will take less than they would on scrub teams, simply for the chance to make history.

Call it a pipe-dream if you want (it is certainly far from our present dilemma) but it is based on the notion that LBJ wants this stage and will "select" CP3 as his "Pippen/Stockton/1st Lieutenant" to get the team its rings.

Moonagie, what's the last championship wing, alpha dog, Jordan type player to have a dominant point guard on their team?

Just not sure how that would work. LeBron would have to defer the ball handling to someone else.

not many great 1-2 combos consist of 2 guys that will dominate the ballhandling & orchestrating on any team... the usual formula is if u have a dominant ballhandler on the team, u wanna pair him up w/a dominant bigman in the post a-la Parker/Duncan, Clyde/Reed, Kobe/Shaq, Magic/Kareem... in fact, u really can't point to many teams at all that have won championships that haven't had a dominant bigman in the post other than Jordan's Bulls... that's why i've always said i personally think Dwight Howard will win a championship before Lebron does... if Dwight Howard ever gets together w/a legitimate star player that can orchestrate on the perimeter like CP3, Deron Williams or somebody like that, that team is gonna be the next dynasty in the NBA w/o a doubt in my mind... obviously if Lebron ever gets together w/a dominant bigman in the post, u can say the same about him as well... it's too bad for him he's getting Shaq on the very tail end of his career.

That is what I was thinking. Why would Lebron and CP3 want to play together when they are both used to having the ball in their hands? CPS just wants another big man to score down low and a SG that can catch and shoot.

True, but if that someone else were CP3 (his BFF in the NBA) who takes on some heavy lifting in the scoring department and dishes with aplomb, I think LBJ could handle the adjustment.

I would greatly prefer to get Rubio on a rookie deal and invest the money in Amare (or some other stud PF) to dominate up front. But Rubio is now a longish shot and CP3+LBJ could get the job done. I don't think Lebron needs to be the point in MDAs system. He has that role in the Cavs system, but that doesn't mean its a permanent part of his game.

Still, your point's well taken. Doesn't work to have two guys who need to orchestrate.
