Greenwich bookkeeper sentenced for embezzling over $250K Posted: 08/28/2009 07:46:16 AM EDT Updated: 08/28/2009 07:46:35 AM EDT
A former bookkeeper for a Stamford towing company received a suspended five-year sentence at state Superior Court Thursday after pleading guilty to stealing a quarter of a million dollars from her employer.
Susan Rudisill, 44, of 30 Brookside Drive in Greenwich, admitted stealing $252,553 from Bill's Service over three years.
The business' owners went to police in July 2006 after a bank teller contacted them when Rudisill tried to cash a $70,000 company check to herself, the prosecutor, State's Attorney David Cohen has said. When they confronted Rudisill, she admitted writing the check, Cohen said. She agreed to repay $50,000 and was fired, police have said.
A company audit revealed that Rudisill wrote checks to herself and altered payroll checks to give herself more money beginning January 2003.
When she pleaded guilty in April, she agreed to a maximum five-year prison sentence, suspended after she serves two years, and five years of probation. Cohen and her attorney agreed that her sentence would be entirely suspended if she and the company's owners could agree on a restitution schedule. Rudisill paid $40,000 Thursday and has agreed to pay $500 monthly for the next five years. The victim's attorney said the victim did not want Rudisill to go to prison because she has a young child.
Sorry but there are people who steal 200$ items who do 2-3 years---250k and get no jail time--and only have to repay 50k is an outrage to a lot of people who are currently in jail for much less. You could say 1st time offender but this was a crime committed over multiple years for a greta deal of money. I think lawyers around the US will cite this as an example for a lot of cases.
RIP Crushalot😞
