No cap room? Why not use Chandler and an expiring?

Let's say Chandler continues his progression next year and turns into a near 20 point scorer and yet we are unable to rid ourselves of either Jeffries or Curry. If we're trying to entice LeBron/Wade/etc. to come, can we obtain a second major talent with a package of Chandler plus an expiring (Jeffries/Curry)? Chandler would potentially see major minutes reductions if LeBron were to come anyway.

Players who extend into 2012 and beyond and whose teams MIGHT want to drop them depending on the circumstances include:

Elton Brand
Andrea Bargnani
Kirk Hinrich
Ben Gordon
Richard Hamilton
Andrew Bogut
Emeka Okafor
Monta Ellis
Chris Kaman
Kevin Martin (we wish)

Baron Davis (ha!)
Gilbert Arenas (double ha!)

Thoughts?

If Chandler turned into a 20 point scorer number 1-- and why would you want to trade him for a 30+ year old when we have cap space again in 2011? I would have to think if Wilson was averaging 18-20 45% rebounding and playing good D we would want to keep him--what is he 21 years old?

jeffries really isn't that bad of a contract. curry is the one that kills the space, its twice as big and he's the worst player in the nba. echoing briggs, if chandler is putting up 20/8 or something, why give him up? curry and jeffries have only 2 seasons left.

Getting rid of Curry and JJSkinny's contracts are nice but not necessary. We can just sign 1 max in 2010 and sign another max in 2011. Pau Gasol and Tony Parker are UFAs in 2011.

That's a helluva list of players there. You're going to trade a 20 pt scorer for one of those?
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

I am not sure that people should be so dismissive of the idea of trading Chandler. Everything depends on what max FA the Knicks eventually sign in 2010, but it would seem that Lebron would not be complemented very well by Chandler (and maybe not even Gallo) who also plays SF.

Playing out the wonderland hypothetical for 2010, assume we get Lebron and then try filling in the other 8 active roster spots for the Knicks in 2010 and see where we would have an excess of talent and where we are lacking. It seems to make sense that we would move at least one of Gallo or Chandler to make up the real talent deficiency at PG and SG.

I would say that Hill and Douglas are complete unknowns at this point and it isn't clear that they belong in the starting lineup. I don't think Chandler is a great first option at SG since that position really should be filled by a sharpshooter (though I like his size and defense there). I also don't think that either Gallo or Chandler are really big or strong enough to play PF-- in each instance we'd be giving up size and strength against elite PFs in the league.

if we trade our expirings we no longer have cap room in 2010. the expirings are where the cap room comes from.

No way do I give a max contract to Pau Gasol. This guy is so overrated.

If Gallo is the goods as billed, you have your 2, 3, 4 positions filled. Both Chandler and Lebron can play any of those positions, and I'd probably play Gallo at the 3. Heck, I'd even give Lebron the ball and let him point.

Chandler is better that most players on that list, and if not obviously better, he certainly has more upside than anyone on that list at this point in their careers.

MY only question with Chandler is whether he can play SG fulltime. We have Gallo and Harrington who are both SFs. We need a young SG to replace Hughes. If Chandler can improve his shot and defend the quick SGs of the league, I would want to keep him as our big SG. Nate and Lee are the trade bait we should use to get rid of an expiring contract. A team like OKL could use both.

I think the Knicks will trade Jared Jeffries, Eddy Curry and a conditional first round pick to the Wizards for Mike Miller, Mike James, and Fabricio Oberto before X-mas.

NOt sure if Oberto and Miller are on one year deals, but the conditional first rounder would have to be in 2012. Assuming Miller has only one year left, I would do that deal and let Lee walk. Fabricio OBerto can give you about 90% of what Lee does.
