Lawsuit: Mayo owes $150K for jewelry A suit has been filed against Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo for breach of contract over nearly $150,000 in custom jewelry, according to a complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. According to the complaint, Mayo, who played at USC during the 2007-08 season, met with representatives of the store on April 1, 2008, to request "specially manufactured" jewelry. Mayo, chosen third overall in the June 2008 NBA draft, never paid for the jewelry.

I'm sure the jewelry was mostly for his mother & grandmother, and the poor ladies he ladles out food to at the soup kitchen he works at each weekend during his offseason.

I think you might be right. He sounds like a very sweet guy.

Why any sane person will pay 150K for jewelry? The case should be dropped. And jewelry store should be held responsible for breaking virginity of the underage athletes.

A catastrophic breakdown in fundamental human and business relations and an obvious lack of healthy thinking mind. Paying for a service should be the first thing on everyones mind once the service has been completed. It's as simple as 2+2. How these messes happen, I cannot even imagine.

I dont know about catastrophic. Going by the date of the purchase its clear that the store owners allowed Mayo to take the jewelry with little to no money down with the promise he would fulfill the agreement once he turned pro and started earning income. The purchase was in April so he was still a broke college student, they were anticipating him becoming a millionaire in a couple of months.

Probably tried to skate by without paying them once he got his jack. Happens.

You skate by when you don't return the $15 rented video game from blockbuster and they never ask for it back. $150,000 worth of jewelry is called theft. Hopefully he pays the money and learns from this. The lesson here: buy things when you can afford to pay for things.

Look these are kids who probably never had too much of anything growing up thats why a lot of B ball players are nearly broke a year after they leave the game. Maybe they hedged him along and maybe Mayo promise them something else like endorsements for a better price. Look movie stars get to ware jewlery from stores all the time. Maybe Mayo wanted to return the merchandise and they refused to take it back because they thought they had a sucker. Maybe they did!!

So he bought something he couldn't afford, or he promised something he couldn't deliver, or he forgot to pay or he tried to steal. Whatever happened, I hope he learns from it. Because if he doesn't he will be broke. I had nothing growing up. When I finally got some money I learned that I didn't want to go back to having nothing. So I learned everything about managing my money. I still make mistakes that have cost me money. Imagine if I didn't learn from my mistakes. I'd be back in the old neighborhood.
