Just thinking outside the box:
The Knicks trade: Duhon 6 mil / expiring Jefferies 6.4 mil / 2 yrs Mobley 9.5 mil / expiring Nate S&T Im guessing 5 mil / 1 yr up to 20 mil / 4 yr
2010 total: 6.4 mil
The Clippers trade: Baron Davis 12.1 mil / 4 yr Marcus Camby 9.5 mil / expiring yr (Bird Rights) R. Davis 2.4 expiring M. Madsen 2.8 expiring
2010 total: $13,050,000
Additional 2010 salary: $6,160,000
The Knicks should consider this because:
Though adding to the 2010 commitments is counterintuitive, this additional salary burden provides better value for that amount than anything else that I can see as being an option right now. I conclude this because: - The Knicks will have to eventually spend money on a starting pg for 2010. There aren't that many good pg free agents next yr. The Knicks might as well go after a pg like Baron Davis who has experience in running and excelling in an uptempo offense. Though he had an off year last yr, he still went for 15 points and 7 assists. - In retaining Camby’s bird rights, they have the flexibility to sign him after signing whichever big name free agent they end up getting without having to consider how his contract fits in under the cap. Also, if he doesn’t work out this time around, he could be traded to a contender at the deadline or simply allowed to expire. - Essentially, the Knicks would be spending an additional $6.1 mil on 1.5 starters (Camby is good when healthy, but at this point he shouldn’t be expected to play more than 65 games a yr, which is ok for the Knicks because they have 2 other 7 footers. - These two veterans could be good pieces in recruiting a major free agent. Keep in mind how pissed many Nuggets players were last year when Camby had his salary dumped. - (Ricky Davis and Madsen would be included to make the deal work on paper. They can get bought out or Marburied for all I care.)
With this trade, the Knicks can have a lineup that looks like this:
B. Davis / Douglas Chandler / Hughes Galinari / Chandler Harrington / * / Hill Camby / Darko / Curry
* Lee could be resigned on a 1 yr deal to retain his bird rights or signed to the qualifying offer, but he could also be told to take a hike. In this scenario we wouldn’t really need Lee: Camby and Harrington are starters in this league; Darko is more than capable as a back up; Hill and Curry will be getting some minutes to show/showcase what they have; and, even Galinari could be getting some minutes at the 4 to see what he is capable of doing there.
The Clippers would consider this because: - The Baron Davis signing has not gone too well for the Clippers. Now many observer’s of the team think that they have to either move Baron or get rid of Dunleavy (the fans prefer firing the latter, but for some reason the guy still has a job). They might as well move him ASAP bc his relationship with the club has potential to fester. If this were to happen, he would have less value than he presently does. - They are already expected to move Camby to make more playing time available to Kaman/Griffin/Jordan/Smith. - Sterling is notoriously cheap. This deal allows him to get out of a large financial commitment to Davis while also allowing him to pocket the savings from effectively swapping Camby’s contract with Mobley’s insured contract. - Nate can sell tickets and Jerseys. He is a fan favorite who could be a valuable sixth man behind Gordon/Duhon, Gordon/Sessions, or Gordon/Iverson. Also, he went for 35 points against the Clips at Staples last year, so the fans could be sold on acquiring him. - The Clippers fans are beginning to think that they have a shot at acquiring a big name free agent in 2010. This allows them to knock of $6.1 mil from their 2010 cap number so that myth can be further perpetuated.
