Hey, I'm moving here in the city and considering cutting the cord and not getting cable TV, just getting high-speed internet service to save a few bucks and get a little more productive.

I really wish that the League Pass Broadband didn't have the local blackout or else I would have no qualms dropping it. I'm figuring just listen to it on the radio, watch it at bars & at friends' houses, or catch the one or two games that come on over-the-air.

Or maybe this year would be a good one for a MSG sabbatical... though I'd probably really miss the TNT most of all.

Any of you guys going without cable?

that's just nuts...but if can control not being able to watch stuff live or in the highest video quality, then the switch shouldn't be too bad.

where are you moving from? if you're going to get a high speed internet service, maybe you can buy a slingbox (initial purchase for $200) and install that in one of your friends/family's house. offer to pay for an extra dedicated cable box for the slingbox, which should be no more than $5-10/month based on cable provider. then you have access to all tv but at only a fraction of the cost.

Good move. Cable is almost uneccesary given that we all pretty much watch everything on the internet. If you have a newer laptop, and have an HDMI port or whatever its called you can just use a cord and connect your laptop to your TV.

Cable really is just around because people like the idea of watching stuff conventionally on their TV. Thats cool, but all I really watch regularly is Spongebob and Sportscenter. Trying to pay 50 bucks a month for that?

Just go to a bar or your boy's house to watch big games.

Verizon... phone/cable/net for $100. I get every movie channel available, plus HD and two boxes so at the end of the day I'm dishing out just under $150. Unlimited long distance in US/PR. Free WiFi router... used to be a cable guy. Very very happy with the service.

I went without it my entire life until 4 or 5 years ago. I was just fine. It's real nice to have. You also have the radio for your local sports games. It sucks at times, but you can definitely make the adjustment. It will help you in the longrun too.

I'm in the city now, just moving from a share to my own joint. Splitting the Time Warner bill 3 ways is better than having to do that bad boy all by myself. I don't need a digital phone, so sucks the Triple Play is cheaper than just high-speed & cable. The Slingbox thing is impractical for me, though I have tried it before, pretty cool.

The only thing that cable is good for is sports IMO between MSG, YES, TNT, the ESPNs... so I wonder how much I could suck it up.

I went without cable when I was in New Orleans last year because I lived in a one bedroom by myself. Too expensive to justify paying from student loans. Had the TV set up to watch movies on the DVD player. I got internet and could see everything I wanted no problem. Any game I wanted to go to I went to Cooter Brown's (best sports bar in the world). Since then I moved to Arlington, VA and decided to go without cable again. Now I go to Carpool for any game I want to see.

I think in the end I spend more by not having cable, but whatever. I can own anyone in shuffleboard and Big Buck Hunter and more than likely win playing pool. I'm more productive at home and more degenerate when I go out.

I have the nfl and nba pckge and its pretty costly, but I took it off for a year and ended up going out more to bars and spending more money.

I've been thinking about giving up cable for awhile now. I hardly ever watch it any more. Not even Knick games.

How do you enjoy Knicks basketball then? If that's not an oxymoron...

Catch it at the pub.
I'd admit, it would be nice to turn it on at home once in a while.
When I'm really desperate, I'll turn it on the radio.

Don't get DISH it sucks! I might switch to the Verizon package.
If you are still following the team and reading sites like this, there is nothing, short of your own demise, that is going to throw you off this train.

cancelled my cable like 3 years ago when my wife got pregnant. We used to play world of warcraft most of our spare time and didn't really watch much tv anyway. Besides i didn't want our baby to be growing up with the "dumb box" and instead using her imagination more, like i did when i was a kid, until about 5. So far its been one of the best decisions ever.
