The New York Knicks have been awarded exclusive rights to negotiate with veteran guard Jason Williams through Aug. 6 after putting in a waiver claim Friday, according to NBA front-office sources.

In February, his agent, Dan Tobin, said the 10-year veteran was determined to come back in spite of the ruling that prevented Williams from latching on with a contender late last season.

"We anticipated this decision," Tobin said then. "So did Jason. But we look forward to seeing Jason back in the NBA in the 2009-10 season.

"One of the reasons we applied for reinstatement now was that we'd like to try to accelerate the process of him coming back."

I'm guessing that this is a safety net - in case it doesn't work out with Sessions. My opinion is - Sessions or no - I don't want Williams.

I came up right behind steph, tinsley, skip, booger, etc....everything was break your man down with the dribble and go to the hole all day...thats the brooklyn game I came up with. J-will probably came up playing with guys that were flashy and he took it to the next level.

"White Chocolate" has a chance today to replace "KryptoNate."

According to a source, the unretired Jason Williams will be at the Knicks' Westchester campus today for a workout/interview as he bids to become the Knicks' backup point guard, supplanting fellow hot dog, Nate Robinson.

The Knicks were awarded exclusive negotiating rights to the eccentric Williams until Thursday after being put on waivers following his reinstatement. Williams, 33, stunningly retired last August after signing with the Clippers, citing personal reasons relating to his wife's pregnancy.

Williams averaged 11.4 points and 6.3 assists over his 10 year NBA career with the Heat, Grizzlies and Kings.

The Knicks are more curious than interested at this juncture. That could change big time after today's proceedings.

Coach Mike D'Antoni wants to talk to Williams, make sure he is healthy enough to withstand his speedball attack and get a sense if he'd be the right fit in a one-year situation.

The Knicks' taste for "White Chocolate" is independent of their desire to sign young Bucks point guard Ramon Sessions, 23, whom they view as a point-guard-of-the-future type.

If the Knicks get him for the one-year, veteran's minimum ($1.9 million) or biannual exception ($2.9 million), they likely are through with Robinson. But they are not looking for Williams to be razzle dazzle, just a steady, high-tempo point man lessening the burden on Chris Duhon.

If anything, the Williams' flirtation could be seen as a negotiating tool in the Robinson talks. Donnie Walsh prefers to bring back Robinson on a one-year deal, but could deem Williams as a cheaper option.

Talks with Sessions' agent continued yesterday but no offer sheet was signed. Sessions' agent, Chubby Wells, has predicted an offer sheet with the Knicks or Clippers will be done today.
