why'd we even sign this guy to begin with?
To find out of he was talented or not. No one is going to work for free without a contract. Sene spent weeks with the Knicks. It is only right that they gave him a short contract. Plus it's not like the Knicks gave him serious cash.
u give out 10 day contracts to players if u wanna see if they have talent or not & then extend them to a full year guarantee if u like them... u don't hand out 2 year guaranteed million dollar deals for players who won't see the light of day off the bench for u... that's just stupid IMO.
What makes you think 10 days is enough time to evaluated Sene when he got signed at the end of the season in April? The Knicks never gave him a 2 year deal. The Knicks gave him a one year deal which was less than a million dollars. Sene came in towards the end of the season and played in practice and summer league to get a full evaluation from Walsh and the coaching staff. Some teams take a whole season to find out where a player stands. The Knicks scouted him in the D-League where he got 3 block shots a game and was a defensive player of the year. Remember he was the top shot blocker there.
As far as a players that never got a light of day, go look around the league. There are players that are really getting paid millions of dollars some 6 to 8 million plus to ride the bench. Not like Sene who got less than a million to play. In the past we paid Luc Lonely and Jerome James who did nothing but ride the bench and wear suits and ties. Signing Sene to find out his skill level is no big deal.
