Forgive me if this has been mentioned before.

I just listened to the TKB radio spot from last night with Rice Balls and Tommy Dee. Good discussion on a wide range of topics - Ramon Sessions and why there hasn't been an offer from Walsh yet, Jamaal Tinsley, 2010 FA, Eddy Curry, Marbury etc... Check it out if you have some free time - it was a good listen. Anyway, early on in the show these guys were discussing the option of bringing back Lee and Nate for one-year deals. Rice seemed under the impression that if we did that, we'd retain their bird rights and have the cap room to FIRST sign whatever key FA or 2 we wanted AND THEN exceed the cap to bring back both Nate & Lee to whatever contracts they wanted w/o any ramifications. Tommy didn't seem too sure, vaguely stating that there would still be a "cap hold" issue. Can anyone lend a hand here? Very important issue that needs to be cleared up. Thanks.

From what I've seen, a player who accepts their QO will be worth 300% their salary as a cap hold. A player that does what is discussed with the 1 year deal will be worth 150% their salary as a cap hold.

In other words...you really can't get around this cap issue thing. I'm pretty sure the last thing you can do is ignore your own FA's, sign everyone you can up to the cap, then exceed the cap turning your attention back to your own FAs. I'm pretty sure that's not possible.

Otherwise, what is the point of the cap, if you can circumvent it in these manners?

This is Joe Smith/Minnesota losing 3 first round picks territory IMO. I don't think it's possible. Again, if it were, what exactly is the point of the cap if you can run circles around it? I'm pretty sure creative loopholes such as this have been well patched up over the years.

Your best bet, as I have told others in the past, is if you have a RealGM account, go to the CBA forum, and pose the question to Larry Coon - who WILL get back to you and tell you exactly what you want to know.

Thanks Cos. Just reacting to what I heard this dude Rice Balls say. I agree with you dude, I don't see how that would be possible either.

Yeah, I mean, I don't really know the answer, just trying to be logical with what I've read.

Larry Coon is the ultimate authority on this and as I said he's very personable and would respond to any question you had. He frequents the RealGM CBA forum. Give it a shot if you're really yearning for an answer.

Will do. But I tell ya this, if there's any truth to this and it's something the Knicks have the option of doing, then I think Lee and Nate should absolutely take one-year deals if Donnie ever offered them - deals that would hopefully be market value/good faith one-year deals, well above the QO. I know they'd be rolling the dice a little bit with their future security but with the way the economy is, the fact that there aren't other team's GMs currently beating down their doors with offers and the fact that they both know damn well what situation Walsh is up against with regard to the cap and the limited flexibility he has to improve this team at the moment - the right thing to do would be to negotiate reasonable one-year deals with the understanding that they will both get taken care of when the time comes. If any of this is true (a big "if" and I will continue to try and verify it), lets see how much these two really care about being team players and wanting to remain in NY..

I believe if they just sign their QO they become unrestricted free agents after the year. I think the cap hold for 1 year deals is to circumvent teams getting around the cap by signing a player for one year to create cap space and then retaining their bird rights so that they have the cap space to sign free agents and then still have the ability to resign their restricted free agents.
