Avast can be continued for free after it expires. Just use the Home version. AVG Free can also be used without it expiring. Best answer is get a MacBook.

Do you have the AVG free version? Why not just download the latest version of that?

MalwareBytes is also pretty good if you have more of a spyware problem. You could also try RUBotted if you think you have a bot.

Go to donwload.com and search there. I recommend Avira Antivirus.

Yeah, Avira's good. I've used their free rescue cd a few times.

Short answer = Linux (or Mac, which is also Unix). But if you just gotta have Windows, see above suggestions.

DJ, what is your ISP? Usually they all offer the full version of a virus-scan program. I'm on Comcast and they give you the full version of McAfee for free.

DJ, you should try BeOS. I'll bet there are not many viruses affecting it.

OS/2 is also still available. Again, I've not heard of any virus problems on OS/2.

Someone else here (sorry I forgot who) recommended ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) which I think works great and is the only thing I use. It's free too.

avast doesn't expire... use the home version like the previous poster suggested... it's the best one i've used yet, better than AVG imho.

Don’t be cheap.
If you want real protection pay for Symantec AV and Spy Sweeper alike tools which are getting live updates of virus and spyware definitions daily.
Otherwise you protection is just a joke.

Symantec is garbage... it uses up way too many resources & doesn't do any better of a job than the freeware that's available for download... avast & AVG give u daily updates of virus definitions too btw & don't clog up your system like Symantec & McAfee do.

I really hate Symantec. I haven't had much experience with McAfee. I actually used to like Symantec, back when it was Norton Antivirus, but that was over a decade ago.

Besides the things you mention, they really put you through hell with the subscription renewal. Symantec doesn't give a crap about its customers.
