Agent: Gortat 'Disappointed' About Return To Magic

Jul 14, 2009 8:30 AM EST

Marcin Gortat was looking forward to playing for the Mavericks, according to his agent.

The Magic surprised and disappointed Gortat when they matched the five-year, $34 million offer sheet he signed with Dallas.

Agent Guy Zucker said the center "was definitely very disappointed" on Monday when Orlando matched the offer.

Gortat will remain Dwight Howard's backup with the Magic, while he was expected to see a spike in playing time with the Mavericks.

"It was definitely about the opportunity to find out how good he can really be," Zucker said. "We had requested that Orlando not match the offer. We stated the fact that he sincerely wanted the chance to carve his own path, be his own man, so to speak, which is not going to be realistically possible in Orlando."

Sucks to be Gortat.

Since when is being disappointed = being a cry baby, and what does the dollar amount have to do with this? Dallas thought he deserved the money, so did Orlando. Gortat wanted to play in Dallas and is disappointed (not crying) that Orlando matched.

Regardless of salary, people are going to have preferences about where they live and be disappointed when those preferences aren't met. The guy is a human. I don't see the problem.

Not sure I understand why you are so dramatic. I agree w/ Bonn, the guy is allowed to be disappointed. He doesn't want to be a career backup and/or Dwight Howard's heavy bag.
You know I gonna spin wit it

I wonder if Orlando matched the contract to trade him - maybe to Houston.

Gortat wanted big minutes and a starting role. That is the root of his disappointment. Aside from that he damn well better be happy to be grossly overpaid and on a team that just went to the NBA Finals and might have improved this offseason. If he's seriously down on his luck and unhappy then someone get him a pacifier.

This episode yet again shows why the NBA's system of signing players, trading players, and all the rules that come with it, is a huge failure. Gortat wanted to leave. Magic had the benefit of letting the "offer sheet" of "MLE size" set his price for them and then they were able to decide to match it keeping a player that wanted to leave.

It's a pretty stupid process. Stern's desire to limit player movement because he felt fans didn't even know their team year to year anymore - all the player movement made fans sour on teams because you couldn't root for the same players for more than a year - created this monster of disaster that is the CBA.

Why? The guy wants to improve in his career and the magic just went a dashed his chances. He does not want to be a an expensive back up. He didin't ask the magic to match his contract he went and found himself a job he would have loved to do. The magic atre lowballing him by forcing him to be a back up.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!
