... will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
OUR MAN VECSEY JOINING HOOP GREATS IN SPRINGFIELD

By RALPH WIMBISH

July 13, 2009 --

Peter Vecsey, the ultimate NBA insider, is heading inside the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Vecsey, The Post's NBA columnist nationally renowned for his irreverent, always ahead-of-the-curve "Hoop Du Jour," will be inducted during festivities on Sept. 10-11 in Springfield, Mass., after receiving the Curt Gowdy Media Award.

The award is presented annually to distinguished members of the print and electronic media for outstanding contributions to basketball. TNT'S Doug Collins will receive the electronic media award.

The pair will join Michael Jordan, David Robinson, John Stockton and Rutgers women's coach C. Vivian Stringer -- announced earlier this year -- in the Class of 2009.

The official announcement will come today, Hall of Fame officials said.

"To be inducted with these guys, it's quite an honor," Vecsey said. "To be recognized as one of the best makes it all worth the while.

"It's amazing. I thought it would never happen, because I'm so tough on people."

Known for his biting style, Vecsey has been breaking stories for The Post since 1977. A graduate of Archbishop Molloy High School, Vecsey attended Hofstra University and served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army's Green Beret Special Forces Unit from 1965-1967.

He also has done considerable work as a TV analyst. He is regarded as the nation's first NBA columnist, grabbing that title at The Post 32 years ago.

Vecsey is famous for the stinging nicknames he's attached to those he's criticized -- among them, Larry (Next Town) Brown; Rashweed Wallace; M(inor) L(eague) Carr; San Quintin Dailey; and Charles (Sir Cumference) Barkley.

Vecsey's wit has targeted entire teams, too -- just ask the New Jersey Nyets, the Cleveland Cadavers and the Los Angeles Paper Clips.

And the trades and other scoops you read about first in Vecsey's columns are too numerous to list.

This will be the fourth time Vecsey has been given Hall of Fame stature. He already has membership to the Molloy Hall of Fame, the Rucker Hall of Fame and the New York City Hall of Fame.

"Doug Collins and Peter Vecsey have dedicated much of their professional careers to report on the game of basketball while they entertain and educate millions of fans, readers and television viewers around the world," said John L. Doleva, Hall of Fame President & CEO.

"The Basketball Hall of Fame is very proud to recognize their extraordinary efforts."

Vecsey, Jordan and the other members of the Class of 2009 will give their formal acceptance speeches in front of a star-studded audience, including over 70 returning Hall of Famers.

He was there first and headed a long line of schlock journalism.

His TV work was actually pretty good.

"C. Vivian Stringer,"

Why? Because she threw a racial tirade over Imus' poor taste comments? Please....

And Vecsey? What for? For being pretty good with Knick rumors for about 3 to 5 years and horrible with them the other 25 years of his career?

Jeez...at this point all one has to do is fart in the stands in MSG and they'll get inducted into the Hall. And, yes, I have indeed farted inside the Garden multiple times over the years so I guess I'll see you all in Springfield.

Stringer has been a coach for a very very long time.

Imus might have bought her fame outside of coaching, but her record is very good for many years.

Stringer has the credentials
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

you effin dope!!!! C. Vivian Stringer is one of the greatest coaches in womens B-Ball history...she is the only coach male or female to lead three teams to the Final Four & although has yet to win the big one her teams have been feared for the last 15 years on the east coast.
As to the issue of Imus, what exactly is a "racial tirade"??? Somebody calls you a name, are you not supposed to respond in kind??? Furthermore, isnt a coach supposed to protect the young men/women under her protection, isnt this exactly the sort of role model that a coach is supposed to be (as opposed to the berating, chair throwing Bobby Knight model, who i'm sure you would have no problem with....)? If Viv is not qualified then I think thewhole Hall is bogus!!!

P.S. - This is almost like clockwork, Cosmic says something stupid & insensitive & I have to rise up & metaphorically smack him in his mouth...

She went overboard 5,000,000%. Sorry, just not buying that whole episode.

As to her coaching records I really couldn't care less. Women's basketball isn't exactly a sought after sport to watch. Let them have their own hall of fame I say.

Wow dude...

So women's basketball is not nearly as popular as men's. I think you'd agree with that. It's a bit more difficult to develop the name branding she has. I don't follow women's basketball and I know who Stringer is. That doesn't happen without being very good at what you do--which is exactly what the Hall of Fame commemorates.

How can you go overboard in protecting the powerless from the most powerful radio host in America. Clearly, you are one of those Imus fans who feels like under the guise of "humor" he should be forgiven for anything he says. While, I totally believe he has the constitutional right to say what he said but Coach Stringer had every right to call him out on it. My only regret is that one of the fathers or brothers of the players didnt step up & smack him in his old "hair club for men" face for the incredible disrespect he showed their daughter/sister. that wouldve been the best way to handle someone who talks alot of "caca" but cant back it up.
