In an interview with KJR Radio in Seattle on Friday, Brandon Roy said he's frustrated and disappointed with the Trail Blazers handling of his contract extension negotiations.

"I sit back and think about all the hard work I've put into my dream, excited about the opportunity to provide for my family," said Roy. "I go in knowing that I've come into the league and I've done everything I can do to get a max contract."

Roy was then asked how he felt about the negotiations.

"It's 50-50 right now. I'd love for something to get done so I can move forward and meet free agents."

RealGM Note: Many observers have expected Roy and the Blazers to painlessly reach an agreement on a full max contract.

I really think Pritchard has done a poor job.

would you guys give Roy a max contract? I would not. It's got to be something like 70 mil over 6...

Only about 7 guys are worth the max in the league.

Kobe
Lebron
Paul
Wade
Garnett
TD
D-Ho (near max, but not max in my opinion)

Roy is no Kobe

While that may be true, you and I both know it doesn't work that way.

i don't think POR has much of a choice in the matter... they'd be absolute fools to let Brandon Roy get away from them... he IS their franchise... if there's anyone they should spend a max contract on, it's him... they ain't getting their hands on no one like Lebron or Wade anytime soon anyway.

How are you determining whether or not someone is worth a max contract? Roy is a superb player and even on a max contract, he'd have tremendous trade value. I'd say that makes him worth a max contract.

The Blazers are retarded if they think they can get Roy back for less than the max. In a situation like this, you put personal opinions aside. Yes, there are several players in this league that don't deserve max contracts, but guess what, they got them anyway. Sometimes you have to overpay because if you don't, other teams will and they end up taking your players in the process.

Go ahead, let Roy hit the open market, he will get the max either way. The smart thing for Portland to do is just give him the max right away and keep him happy. Its not easy to find young all-stars like Roy and when you consider everything that Brandon has done for that Blazers franchise, giving him the max is an easy choice. That franchise was a mess before Roy, he has really helped turn them into a winner.

Maybe Pritchard is saving his max money for Oden.

max is a guy you build a franchise around, is an all star every year, and can carry a team to the playoffs/has won a championship.

Roy is without a doubt top 10 player in the league. the blazers were mediocre at best last year and he carried them to a top 4 seed in the west. i would without a doubt offer that guy a max, he is a high character player, can play either guard position, makes everybody better, and has contributed since day 1 in the league. no question about it.

That's not the normal way to define value in economics, though. Normally something is worth what others will pay for it. If a player is going to have high trade value on a max contract, I don't see how you can say he's not worth a max contract. (I do think all of what you've said applies to Roy anyway, though.)
