Disabled Player exception - Enables teams to sign a player to replace a player that suffered an injury and is out for the season or the remainder of the season depending on when the injury accrued. The max salary the replacement player can be signed for is 50% of the injured players yearly salary. Teams may use one exception to sign multiple players but they are not permitted to use multiple exceptions to sign one player.

I don't understand the league. We were denied this and it dragged on for months but now with Yao who was hurt in the playoffs and might be back next year the exception is given so quickly. This is a very recent thing, so how could the league already know he is going to be out the year? Seems to me like the league is just helping Houston out as shouldn't this have been given out sometime during next season and not so quickly?

What case are you talking about with us? Mobley? You're the only person I've heard say Yao could be back this year. All the reports are that they'll be lucky if he ever plays again.

(Yes I was referring to Mobley).
The reports vary but yes, some have said he is out indefinitely (Yes that is bad). My point is that "these reports" are quite recent and that one would think that there are at least a few months more of treatment before a disabled player exception is given. He has an injury that has not yet healed, nor responded to treatment. I'm more questioning the time the Mobley outcome took, not to mention the actual outcome. With the Mobley situation there was almost an insinuation by the league that we knew his condition worsened. Yeah, I guess that is why I'm questioning the league. (Though in hindsight his insured contract is valuable to us now).

By the way, I'm not losing sight of the fact that a persons life/livelihood is involved.

See the thing is, it's for a season ending injury that needs to be applied for within a year of occurrence.

The problem with Mobley is that every team he previously played for signed off on the condition, so the NBA declared they could not give a dpe since it wasn't a season ending injury but a preexisting condition.

Yeah, I see your points and can agree. It seemed to work out ok for us with Mobley (as long as the league does let us trade his contract, and there has been rumor that that will be refused.)

Fair enough, EMS. I don't know what the norm is for the league in Yao's situation.
