we will know more in a week, so for now we will work with status quo numbers:
taking into account rumors of Lee's contract (4 years $32mm paying him 6.5, 7.5, 8.5 and 9.5) and a potential FA signing here is where we are end of next year:
Curry 11.2
JJ 6.9
Gallo 3.3
Lee 7.5
Chandler 2.1
Hill 3.3
douglas 1.2
Morris Almond 1 (say he makes roster and we give him 2 years at 800k and $1mm)
Grant Hill 6 (or Artest, Ariza, Kidd, take your pick here at best valued FA)
That puts us at $42.5mm or $15.5mm under last year's cap # ($59mm) which is pretty good.

Based on what DW did last year with Zach and Crawford its not ridiculous to suggest we can trade Curry and JJ. Possibly combining Mobley's $$$ savings, or a usefull player like Duhon's expiring contract to a team that needs to save money.

***IF*** DW can move Curry and JJ than you look like this at the end of the year:
Gallo 3.3
Lee 7.5
Chandler 2.1
Hill 3.3
douglas 1.2
Morris Almond 1
Grant Hill 6

Well that puts us at $24.4mm
With two max level FAs ($17mm per) at $34mm
That puts us at $59mm or right at the cap. If it goes up a few mill (as it has in recent years) that allows us the wiggle room to fill out the roster with late first rounders or 2nd rounders or league min FAs

Fish...

You're posting our cap numbers and saying, let's assume Donnie gets rid of Curry and Jeffries.

That's like walking up to a girl at the bar and saying, let's assume that I get rid of my herpes.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

My belief is that as long as you don't have guys
on your roster that are not worth their contracts, anything is possible.
Then you are in a position to make trades either for talent, or for expirings
to make a FA signing. Finally, we're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of
our history of being burdened with a slew of terrible contracts:

Glen Rice (only due to injury)
Spoon
Eisley
Travis Knight
MoT
Houston
JYD
TT
Marbury
ZBo
Q

2 more to go. And for that matter JJ2 is REALLY not worth his contract, but Walsh may be able to do something with it cuz its relatively small. Curry, if he can be 75% as productive as he was at his peak should be movable as well. He's a 7' legit center,
a hard to find commodity.

no.. first scenario assumes those guys are still here which still has us in the game for one max level FA.

Also we have some assets to move to move those guys that are attractive to other teams.

And finally this time last year people were talking about giving up our lottery pick or trading down just to move Zach's unmoveable contract. Low and behold Zach (and Crawford) are gone, and now we have Mobley who's contract can save a cash strapped team like $8mm.

I think its ambitious to hope one of them will be gone, but with Mobley's contract and potential for Lee or Nate to go in a sign and trade I can guarentee you that at least JJ will be off the books. Thats probably why DW is willing to use the MLE on a guy like Kidd or GW

Disagree?

I don't know what Hill is going to be in this league, but I do know what Lee will be. 16pts 12rbs and an improving jump shot. which could easily push him into the 20pt range with his level of improvement.

Curry/Hill to Houston for TMAC that clears 14 million dollars off our cap, and we can give Lee 8 million per and sign two max free agents.

Lee/Gall/Chandler/Douglas is still the core and we can add two guys to the mix and use the mid level next season on top of our signing. Not to mention the veteran talent that would come our way.

I think Houston would do the deal, they save money they get a possible player to play upfront in Curry and a lottery pick

MS - I hate to be the one to break the news to you but... David Lee is not a core player. He is a nice piece to have if you have the luxury of spending on a sixth or seventh man but...

As a forward defending larger, more fluid guys he is what he is... a liability.

You only answer questions with another question?

To answer your question though Curry. 7 footer, 26 years old, scores at 55%, makes less than 10mm a year and has a short contract. If your going to tell me there is zero market such a player I would say your herpes medication is affecting your thinking.

The other guy is JJ who is a bad (but short) contract. There is no real market for him but if can use Mobley's contract to save some team several million dollars he is movable because there is certainly a market for that as we have seen

the people who say the knicks won't have that much cap room are basing their rationale on a much lower cap - i've seen some projections that the cap will fall all the way down to $50M which is ridiculous. If the cap is around $59M we'll definitely be fine for one FA.

i really hope we can use Nate to jettison Jefferies.

agree.. but dont you think at the very worst we let Nate walk and jettison JJ with Mobley's medical savings?

Knicks have some options here, and if we do nothing we can still offer max to one player.

My gut feeling is both Curry and JJ are gone.

How about Chandler, JJ, Mobley and Curry for TMac? Houston saves money this year and gets a good building block in Chandler. Curry is 26 and they might see him as salvagable.

We lose Chandler (which I dont like) but free up $18mm in cap space allowing us to add someone this year

I don't think Houston would take both of those guys. They have wings right now.

I don't understand why everyone is so down on Lee. They invited him to the olympic tryouts for a reason. He will be your third best player on the team. Who was the Cavs second best player? Mo Williams??? He isn't even better then Nate. Outside of 4 teams in the league that's not all that bad. Especially if you have Lebron and another player in the fold if you give Houston a big in the deal, Hill with Curry. Chandler, Lee, Gallo are only getting better you pair those guys with Lebron and a big, and Nash will be here you don't think that team competes for the title?

I really hope that we can get something for Nate and Lee.

Debate: More worthless cap killer

Jefferies or Curry?
Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

You add $20 million the cap next year with Douglas, Hill, Kidd and Lee and you cannot sign anyone to a max contract. That's the bottom line.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

If we sign Kidd and Lee the league still lets us make roster moves. Your one trade away from max cap space with a lot of options

Fish, you have to include the phantom players in your list, that eats away at cap space also.

Grant Hill won't be given anything more than a LLE contract... he probably signs w/Phoenix.

whats the roster min? 450k? You figure on that path the 9th 10th and 11th guys will be summer league minimum types. We are talking like 1.5mm total. Should still work.
