After the Knicks rolled out the red carpet for free agent Jason Kidd Wednesday with a tour of the Garden's exhibit of the renovation plans and the usual pomp-and-circumstance on the arena floor (complete with a presentation of a No. 5 Knicks jersey), Newsday has learned that Grant Hill will come in next week for his own recruiting visit.

Okay, I can understand Kidd since the Knicks need a PG and a PG could have the biggest impact in this offense, but Hill? Yeah he's a point forward, but the guy can't be reasonably expected to log heavy minutes or even manage to play in more than 60 or so games. Don't see the upside there.

“I think it’d be helpful to have successful players who can impart what it takes and what you have to do in order to win,” Walsh said. “And our team hasn’t won in awhile, so I think that’d be helpful.” -- Donnie Walsh, from http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/02/sports/basketball/02knicks.html

I think that's his angle. Get some winners & character guys in the ballclub to do a reverse Marbury. Help get the coaches' plans in the heads of the younguns. Hill seems like a real character guy, but I wonder if he shouldn't stay down there in the Phoenix weather with the Suns trainers since this was his first season he played all 82 games, and his first season over 70 games since 2000.

Though I'd love to see Tamia courtside. That is one beautiful woman... a great pick from North America (Canada).

Off-topic: I was surprised by the presentation... is that standard in the league in wooing free agents? Can't even imagine what their presentation to LeBron would be like.

I like Hill's character and experience too, but we have precious few resources to allocate here.

Oh boy, another nearly washed up mess that wouldn't be here more than a year or two, and then would fade away.

Again, we're trying to build a team here. Part of that involves continuity and familiarity. Adding Kidd and Hill for a year or two does nothing but disrupt the flow. It does not help unless they want to become assistant coaches immediately after hanging up the sneakers.

No thanks. I want to add young talent and players who will be here for the long haul... 2010-2015 is the long haul. Players that won't be here past 2011 are USELESS to us unless we pull off a "boston celtics" type offseason.

If Hill wants to come to NY for the LLE, why not? He's a consummate professional and would be a great guy to teach the younger players how to play. Hill could definitely help at 10-15 minutes a night

I see guys talking upside and stuff....you miss the point. Getting a Grant Hill and a Kidd makes perfect sense. They will play sparingly, and provide leadership to the upside of the team in Gallo and Wilson...now Jordan and Toney. Maybe even Lee and Nate if they stick around...These guys will help keep the dudes focus and report to the coach if they feel certain guys are totally not getting it out on the court from a players perspective.

I seriously doubt the Knicks get both players but like I said in the Kidd thread....if the Knicks throw the plan in their lap and they can dig it, then bam...deals can get done.

NY is retirement place for NBA players... second after Miami of course...
They are building Senior NBA citizens condos in Manhattan. Just 3 mils after discount...

if we're interested in Grant Hill i'm thinking Wilson Chandler's as good as gone in a trade for Rubio.

I thinking picking up Grant Hill will not effect roster moves...Hill is still a good rotational player and still an effective starter on a good team...but he would be more responsible for the chemistry, mentoring, leadership, etc...

Knicks are trying to set the foundation. You need more than players with upside. You need a good mix of vets too.

Yes to Grant Hill

"I think that's his angle. Get some winners & character guys in the ballclub to do a reverse Marbury"

Dr. Alphaeus - you nailed it. Grant Hill's favorite player was Patrick Ewing, hence the number 33. I think Hill would be a fabulous addition as a player/coach and hotel hall monitor. He has some orange and blue ion his blood.

"...what separates winners and losers remains very much the same: No collection of players, no matter how good, can win unless they form a team. And no team can succeed unless it shares common values, among them courage, discipline, resilience, respect, and an unmitigated passion for the game."

"Bill Bradley revisits the basketball court with the fire of the competitor and the eye of the writer and explores these qualities in action: the dynamics of teammates on the court and off, the individual courage to risk the last-second shot, the responsibility to teammates, coaches, and fans to stay inshape, play hard, and honor the game."

Who better to teach fellow players the core values of Bill Bradley?

The Old School (Knicks) Values - responsibility, discipline, passion, selflessness and respect.

Without all of those 5 core qualities you cannot win basketball games as a team. I don't care how high you can jump, what your combine test results were or who your NBA comparison is.

I can't see why we'd offer Hill more than a one year deal at this point.

If it was more than a 1 year deal, it would have to be a sign and trade where we got rid of Jeffries (or ideally Curry but I can't see that happening).
If the salary and FA signing rules were as loose as they are in baseball, it would be a completely different scenario. Then I'd more than welcome Grant Hill here and have zero qualms about re-signing David Lee.

Amen brotha!!! Bip has been screaming this for years. Stocking up on draft picks and putting young guys with potential next to each other is great but to make it work you need vets that have won and led to show them the way. The psychological side of sports is often overlooked. Guys like kid can do exactly what you say. They can minimize problems in the locker room. They can mentor the young players regarding on the court skills, how to handle adversity, how to handle losing/winning and how to prepare for games. Some of our young guys have learned these things from Stephon and Zach and Eddie and Q. I can guarantee there is a lot of misinformation traveling around that locker room. We need winners to show them the proper path and it can't just come from the coaching staff. I welcome JKidd and Grant and think either would be a brilliant move. It's not about these guys leading us to titles or recruiting Lebron. Lebron is not coming to NY for the rest of his career becasue a 50 year old Kidd or Hill asked him too. This is about showing the young guys how to win all those close games we lost so that guys like Lebron and other free agents will see a winning team here.

I just hope that people will like me

I like this idea of Hill and Kidd as Locker Room Monitors/Snitches/Spies for the coaching staff.
