Blazers make play for Turkoglu
Posted on: July 1, 2009 1:18 am

Determined to make the first splash of the NBA's free-agent negotiating period early Wednesday, the Portland Trail Blazers are making a strong push to sign Hedo Turkoglu, the prized free agent of the summer.

While negotiations across the league were in the early stages, a person with knowledge of the discussions said the Blazers are trying to lure Turkoglu with a deal in the $50-million range. Contracts cannot be signed until July 7, when the annual moratorium on signing and trading players is lifted.

Other teams expected to make a play for Turkoglu, who earned a huge pay day by helping Orlando get to the NBA Finals, were Toronto, Detroit, and Sacramento. The Magic, who acquired Vince Carter from the Nets on the belief that they could not retain Turkoglu, are not expected to be a factor in a situation that involves Turkoglu getting $10 million a year.

Another off-season another reach. Hedo disappears too damn much to give him 50 million. Either Young Turk plays Hoodini or he goes off, there is literally no in between.

Magic played this well.

50 million is way to much for Hedo. If he didn't play so well in the playoffs there would be no way he gets this kind of money.

I am shocked that people are making offers to Hedo before Odom... I would have thought Odom would be higher up on the PF want list...

Isn't there a report that the Thunder offered Millsap 65M?

Honestly....not this again in the NBA.

Meanwhile for the Magic - Hedo is a jerk for trying to leave what would be a repeat Finals team next year if he stayed. Magic offered him 4/35 but I think they should have offered 3/30 to keep that team intact.

Replacing Hedo with Vince doesn't get them over any hurdles IMO --- unless they score with a dedicated Rasheed or healthy Dice to fill in at PF for them - then it's okay - but those are unknowns and the team knows how to play with Hedo.

I don't blame Hedo for going for a big payday but at the same time you're already worth 8 figures - wouldn't you rather stay where you've carved out a niche for yourself - on a finals team no less? I don't get these guys.

Hedo would rather go suck on a crap team for five years to get his money. Shameful.

Hedo and Roy are too similar if you ask me (obviously Roy is better) but this seems pretty redundant to me.

Good,

That leaves them less to offer lee or have to do a sign and trade. if they want him.

Hedo was fantastic in the playoffs for the Magic. I think the Magic actually made a mistake here - Vince is over the hill and has never been clutch and Hedo got them to the Finals running their offense with Alston. Now they're switching over to Nelson and Vince. We'll see.

It is a lot for Hedo but I think the Blazers have the start of something nice going on there. They are overpaying and he is not consistent, but they have a huge front court and Roy in the back court, seriously, whats not to like?

They will have more competition in the West to get to the finals but I would say over the next 5 years they will be there. The Magic are the ones losing out here, the tandem of Lewis and Hedo was pretty awesome.

I would think that he should be starting at SF for Portland who already has Aldridge.

I thought that he seemed out of gas at times in finals. I like his game when he is at peak level, but I wonder about his training regimen.

I agree with you, but then look at what Orlando did with Lee in the Carter trade. No love from Orlando to the rookie who gave so much to the team. Instead they go for the injury prone superstar. No loyalty from the team in this case, right. The game is usually a business for both sides.

Lets see what Odom does- it sounded like he wanted to stay with the Lakers, even for less than his market value. Maybe you will have you example of a player who knows a good situation when he sees one after all.

Smart signing by Portland. He gives them a solid go to option other than Roy. Portland will be capped out next year anyway and they have a stacked bench. They are going to be a fun team to watch next year.

if u compare their stats & considering his ex-teammate Rashard Lewis was pulling down over twice that much i'd say $50 mil for Hedo is alot less heinous a contract... still probably on the overpaid side, which just tells u how obscene Rashard's contract is to begin with.
