Hedu, Odom, Lee, Boozer, Milsap, Ariza, Gortat, Nate, Villanueva, Sessions....I'm sure I am missing some. And there are 3 teams w/ cap room. There will be some major FA discounts available via the MLE. I'd probably prefer to split the MLE on Gortat & Sessions than use $8mm on Lee.

Let's say the Knicks have the choice of:

-re-signing Lee to 8mm per AND Nate to 4mm per

OR

-re-signing Lee to 8mm per & letting Nate walk

OR

-targeting Villanuava or even Odom for the MLE & either letting Lee and/or Nate walk or keeping the radar up for S&T possibilities

OR

-targeting Gortat & Sessions for the (split) MLE & either letting Lee and/or Nate walk or keeping the radar up for S&T possibilities

I like the sound of the latter 2.

Leads to:

C: Gortat/Curry
PF: Chandler
SF: Gallo/Harrington
SG: Hughes (only until a draft pick can displace him), Derozan
PG: Sessions/Duhon

w/ the following trade assets:

-3mm to buy picks targeting guys like: Casspi, Mills, Heyfelt, Beaubois

-the insured Mobley contract

-Nate, Lee S&T potential

I guess Gortat

edit:

JVG called Gortat a better individual defender than D. Howard. I agree.

With Bosh, Howard, KG around.....it sure would be nice to have a decent post defender besides a guy whose only ammunition is the pull the chair trick (Malik Rose). At least he gave effort, its more than we can say about all the other post defenders in the last decade (exception = Kurt Thomas).

I think the Knicks simply can't sign David Lee....Say what you want about Charlie....he is worth what he is gonna get paid. Lee isn't. Charlie is gonna get half of what Lee would get from the Knicks. Charlie blocks shots and is 6'11". He man defense and weakside help is better than Lee by far. Odom is another one. He is a very good player period...with those 2 guys on the market no way do you sign David Lee....add Milsap and Boozer too.

I would look to sign Charlie and Gortat....Sessions is another definate option.

Things is both players will probably sign offer sheets early cuz of their talent level. I say let them do it. Nate's talent is more valuable than Lee IMHO...

Draft a point guard....sign Odom to the full mid-level or sign both Charlie and Gortat for a split mid-level....aaaaand done!!!

Keep in mind Cuttino's insured contract, Harrington, Duhon, Q-rich, and Hughes are all expiring contracts....Knicks could pony up and actually turn a packedge of these guys to one solid player...I think Rip or Vince could be had.

If you can get Nate for $4M, you sign him. I don't think there's anyone, not on their rookie contract, whose better with that price tag. That said, I doubt you can get him that cheaply. Nate has proven his worth in this league and I think he garners at least the MLE.

No way does Nate go for 4M$, at least 8M$. He is way too good. Someone compared his stats to Mo Williams and Nate clearly won. Put Nate on the Cavs this year and they are in the Finals.

honestly, i don't see how nate would $8 mil a year.

too many question marks and concerns, even with the strengths he does possess.

i'd guess somewhere between 4-7 mil, but probably closer to the middle.

Forum Po Po and #33 for a reason...

Nate won't get 8mm or close. Yes, his #s are impressive, but he's a coaches headache andd you need a big PG to play with him (so he can play SG). Otherwise, he's a square peg in a round hole.

this is what I think happens

Lee 8 million
Gortat MLE
Draft a PG

PG Duhon/Curry or Flynn or Jennings
SG Hughes
SF Chandler/Gallo
PF Lee/Gallo
C Gortat

That will put them at 33-35 million in cap space and still be enough to pursue one top level FA, like Joe Johnson and enough to for a sidekick too.

True, true, maybe 8M$ is a bit much, but I agree with 4-7.

^^ Hughes at SG, I don't like. Don't like Hughes anywhere. Hopefully they remedy the Hughes problem this off-season.

You know, I thin JJ Reddick would be a nice addition off the bench to the Knicks. This guy can take it to the hole, sometimes, and he is dead on from 3. He just needs a confidence boost, like MDA can give.

Reddick is a good player who could get much better if he learns to create space for his shot.

Definitely. And that is still a possibility.

Orange, I put that out last week that he needs to get out from Orlando, high expectations and undefined role.

He is the kind of player that could really benefit with a MDA kind of coach. His game is not strong enough to displace the shots Hedo and rashard get. He gets the scraps.

Nice.

Yea, if you saw the game last night, when he came in in garbage time he was more aggressive and willing to put up the shot-- this is probably because the pressure was off and he had free reign. With a different setting and a confidence-boosting coach like MDA, he can put up 10+ easily.

Yeah, that math is not correct.

Keep in mind, in rough terms, I have other posts where I break it down specifically:

Curry 11M
Jeffries 6M
Gallo 4.5m
Chandler 3M
#1 Draft Pick 3.5M
= 28M
Assuming cap is $64M, that leaves $36m in salary cap space (assuming we fill the roster with 2nd rd picks)

8M to Lee and 6M to Gortat means we have $22M for FAs in 2010. That's 1 FA. If you want Lee in 2010, you need to get rid of Curry or Jeffries. As far as I am concerned, there can be no consideration to re-signing Lee until you get rid of the other two. I want two 2010 FAs more than Lee. $36m is maybe two max FAs-- depending on their experience.
You know I gonna spin wit it

re-sign lee, sign gortat, sign jj, and trade for nash...

nash + jj + gallo + lee + gortat = the white shadows...
