Manchester United have accepted a world-record $130 million offer for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid...Real, who have fallen behind bitter rivals Barcelona, have swooped to follow up the $92 million signing of Brazil star Kaka from AC Milan earlier this week.

Saw that this morning.. why is Man U selling off the Worlds greatest player? Do they have someone else in the pipeline they are expecting to take his place or do they need $$$$$?

Man United has a debt of about 980 million euro's, what they said anyway during the champions league final. Also his contract wasn't owned by the team itself but by an investment group, which seems to happen more and more in soccer.

Still soccer it the exact example of why there is a salary cap and restrictions on salaries, so that the big teams cannot outbid you to the point that a smaller market team just cannot afford it anymore. There isn't a level playing field, big teams in big countries just have a larger fanbase and more money at their disposal. Imagine no salary rules and a bidding war for a player between Memphis and say Chicago/LA/NY

uhm

that's right, no chance.

theres been some bad blood w ronaldo and united for a few years now, but the addt'l money from the extension kept him there for the short term. so now, with man u losing to barca in the finals 2-0, it paves the way for him to leave. i also think man u was one of the teams (real and barca as well) looking at getting mesi, as were some other teams. mesi has taken over the label as the world's best footballer in recent months although ronaldo won the official award this past january. i dont believe its a matter of man u wanting to keep ronaldo as much as it is ronaldo wanting to get the h*ll out of dodge. now, with kaka and ronaldo in real, they could seamingly retake the top spot back from barca.

That and Barcelona crushed them... I saw that game at a futbol bar and the Man U fans were screaming about what a ***** he was. Sounded like more impassioned ARod bashing. So if there ever was an opportune time to profit...

yea, the NBA players are over paid. I mean how many guys in the NBA have contracts over 100 mil? Kobe, arenas, lebron soon to be, and I am sure there are others, KG, and then you add in all of the 70-90 mil contract and you have a league full of overpaid babies..

sorry your getting 2 players confused here KBY. Ronaldos rights are owned by United. Tevez's rights are owned by MSI group.

And to answer everyone else, hes leaving cuz hes a fool. He has said for a year now he wants to play for Madrid, so hes leaving the biggest club in the world to play for a team in decline. So far, Madrid have spent over £135m on 2 players, Ronny and Kaka. They are also bidding for Villa. hey need to spend to keep their fans interested cuz the product on the field last year was just not good enough. Lets just see if the Galacticos approach works for them. It didnt last time with Zidane, Figo, Raul etc.

To clarify, those arent their contracts. Thats the amount a team has to pay another for the right to sign the player. Reportedly, Ronaldo will sign a £9.5m per year deal which is NOT as big as most NBA deals.

As a United fan, I will miss him but im also glad hes gone. Hes a very VERY high maintenance player, and hes been annoyingly public about his desire to go to Madrid. We signed him for £12.5m, so we are making a huge profit.

IMO we did NOT sell him for money reasons at all. Despite the reported debt at the club, considering we get 76,000 fans in every single game, reached the CL Final last year, won the League and the League Cup, we are not lacking for cashflow. Fergie is undoubtedly and the undesputed greatest currently serving manager in any sport, and he will not allow any player to be bigger then the club. Beckem left, United got better. Van Nistelrooy left, United got better. Stam, Keane, Cantona the list goes on. United will not die because they are selling one player.

Still, thanks for all the great memories Ronny, we will miss you on the field.

yeah, last year this was a rumor. other than man u supporters, ronaldo is HATED in england. imagine going around everywhere in the country you live and work in where you are pretty much hated by all sports fans in the country. that's practically how it is for him, so i don't entirely blame him for wanting to be in spain, where he will probably be loved in general.

Exactly. And whos the most successful manager ever? And which team has had about a thousand manager in 4 years?

Guaranteed, Ferguson already has the next Ronaldo in mind. Hell, he probably already plays for us!

Wanna hear a kids dream? Your 15 years old, kicking a ball around the park with your friends, and a guy comes up to you, tells you he works for Man Utd and do you want to play for them? Of course you say yes. Less then 2 years later, your 17 years old, done your work on the training ground, played in the reserves, waited your turn and the manager puts you on the bench for a must-win game again the number 5 team in England, Aston Villa. This might be your first ever game for United.

Disaster!! United are down 2-1 with 13 minutes to go! Ronaldo scores to make it 2-2, but this is a must-WIN game, not tie!!! Holy crap!! Whats the manager doing?!?! He's taking off Nani, a player they paid £16m for and... and... hes calling your name! You!! WTF!

What do you think happened next?

Just remember the name Kiko Macheda. I love that he went and hugged his dad after.

but aren't those transfer fees, not individual player contracts? i understand that transfer fees go to the club, and salaries are payed separate from that.

The market will re-correct, but players received those sort of contracts for a reason. That said, the Rashard lewis' of the world --- complementary pieces that are paid superstar dollars should become extinct.

good point. they did win champions league in '01-'02, and they had quite a few huge stars (Raul, Figo, Zidane, Robertos Carlos, etc.), and some other very good and known players, but then they started really becoming the 00' yankees of europe, buying every super star player in existence, even when they already had a very strong team.

before the 2002-03 season they buy Ronaldo
03-04, Beckham
04-04, Michael Owen

btw, being the sort of dream team it was, kept me very interested and steadily more and more interested in international football/soccer.

this actually relates to the problem of parity for casual or new fans of a pro-sport, as i have said before.

if you have big teams consistently good it can really help attract new fans to a sport. it sucks for hard core fans and those who want to see small teams win, but international soccer partially does so well because of its mega-teams.

i think the nba is a league that probably doesn't want too much parity either, because it can't compete in this country with american football, who can afford a bit to have less parity because it doesn't really appeal to most international sport fans the way basketball does.

anyway, that real madrid team was sick, in terms of talent.

back then i was also a huge follower of holland, with a ridiculous team that couldn't even get into the 2002 world cup. that was crazy.
