LOS ANGELES -- Though the Knicks likely will take a combo-type guard in the June 25 NBA Draft, Knicks team president Donnie Walsh will eye a center with his $5 million mid-level exception during free agency, and Orlando's 7-foot backup Marcin Gortat is very high on his list, The Post has learned.

The Knicks had no interior defensive presence, and that's Gortat's strength. He also blocks shots and rebounds. (The Knicks were last in blocked shots the past two years).

The Polish big man originally was drafted by coach Mike D'Antoni's Suns in the second round of 2005, but they traded his rights. Gortat probably will not be re-signed because he plays a smallish role as Dwight Howard's backup and the Magic can't pay him accordingly.

Gortat said the Knicks could be an ideal spot. Gortat (four points, three rebounds) played 15 minutes last night as Magic coach Stan Van Gundy often used a twin-tower alignment to combat the Lakers' size.

Magic general manager Otis Smith can match any offer, but said he knows it will be a financial challenge to retain Gortat.

"He's got the best job in America, playing behind my best player, playing 8 to 10 minutes," Smith said. "He goes out and does his job and probably has the best work ethic of anyone in the locker room. Can he start for another team? Yeah he can.

"I'll just deal with it and the market will dictate where he goes," Smith added. "I would like to keep him on our team, but it depends if someone wants to make him a starter and figures out what's my breaking point. I'm sure teams will make a run for him."

Gortat averaged 12 minutes, scoring 3.8 points and 4.5 rebounds. Van Gundy, whose Magic team lost 101-96 in overtime and trails the best-of-seven series, 2-0, said he may play him more in The Finals to combat the Lakers' size advantage.

"I love New York, I can tell you that," Gortat said. "It was the first city I landed when I landed in the states five years ago. I love Coach D'Antoni and I know [Danilo] Gallinari from Europe."

I'd be happy with a Gortat signing, it seems like his game is tailor-made for a Mike D'Antoni big man.

Gortat and Lee would compliment each other well, if we resign Lee.

Yeah, Berman never cits sources- but at least he got direct quotes from Gortat saying he wants to play for the Knicks, meaning his agent will likely contact us.

I never open Berman articles anymore. The headlines of his articles are always misleading just so he can get people to click links. He's probably the person you would last go to for real information.

This headline said that the Knicks are interested in him, meanwhile the article itself only states how Gortat is interested. It's amazing he even has a job, along with his editors.

Definitely looks like a potential value signing- Good rebounding/shotblocking rates and very nice shooting efficiency. Also like his work ethic. He profiles very similarly to Zaza Pachulia right before he signed with Atlanta. IMO he can be at least as good if not better.

I'm not a berman fan myself either but the article does say the knicks are interested in the very first line.

From the sounds of the way the article is written, Berman's source is probably Gortat's agent

I wanna know where the Post learned that from other than Donnie saying we need a shotblocker.

Unless it's a 1 year deal, it's just going to hurt us in the 2010 FA market

He, and other players need to create a market for themselves to get the biggest contract.

Next year will be worse with our cap space.

If we sign him u would have to figure some kind of deal relating to nate or lee or some other move would happen. I can't see it happening otherwise.

I would give him a three year deal 10 million dollar deal with the first year including our entire mid-level exception and then going down. I think the Spurs would be a good fit as would the thunder. The guy is a hard worker and brings two things to the table that the team really needs.

If we get Curry in the draft, anything from Eddy, and a healthy Gallo that addition plus a resigned Lee will make the Knicks a playoff team.

MS - playoffs? really? Curry and Curry are going to get us there eh?

Until Walsh proves otherwise, I don't believe any long term signing rumors.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

I really think that it's possible. The team was in a lot of games this season I can count about 8 they lost because of stupidity. And a few more because of lack of brains on the court. Curry is a smart kid that knows how to play the game and will get open looks. If Gallo and Chandler are heathly it's going to be hard to ever doable anyone out there. I really wish the team could just buy out Q and Larry though. No need to look at either of them.

But with a little more reliable outside scoring and 20 minutes of a healthy eddy combined with Gortat I think our frontcourt becomes pretty strong. Eddy does two things well draw fouls and score close. I am not a huge fan but if he is in ok shape he can really create problems down lown for teams.

First off a lot of you are once again be sucked into ideas just thrown out by the media. Secondly, please look at Gortat closely. He looks good on the Magic because they are an NBA Finals team and he is backing up Dwight Howard quite possibly the best big man in the game today.

You put Gortat on the Knicks and due to our terrible roster he might very well start. Well, Potapenko he is not and even THAT guy sucked. This is when you will start cursing "Why did we sign another Jerome James to Jerome James type money!? Is this bum going to cost us a solid FA in 2010 now cause we just torched our MLE on him!? HES A BUM!!!!"

I just don't understand why some see Gortat in Orlando as the same player in New York. He won't be. Why? We don't have any good players. None. He would be one of our top players because our roster is chock full of trash. So when he gets here you know what? He will be trash because HE IS TRASH!!!!

On Orlando....any number of our players would look studly. On the Knicks? They look like crap players who won 32 games.

Why.........................can't anyone ever seem to factor in ENVIRONMENT in their decisions on players?

Ariza is a stud on the Lakers. Ariza would be a trash can on the Knicks.

Enough with these role playing bums and wanting to sign them! ENOUGH! We care about the Balkmans, Arizas, Gortats, Barnes', Rodriguezes', etc - WHEN WE HAVE A GOOD TEAM.

You sign all these role playing bums that everyone wants and you know what you get? Exactly what we already have - a 30 win team chock full of role playing bums!

I just can't take this crap anymore. Wise up, fellas, wise up. We have a team full of Dudley's and you guys are constantly raving about other team's Dudley's and how you want to add them to our team and how it will make us good. That DOES NOT WORK and WILL NOT WORK.

Fair enough; but some shotblocking would be nice.

Cosmic, I disagree. What Gortat does well is rebound the ball, play d, and block shots. He'll continue to do those things no matter who he's playing with. And these are all thing that this team needed badly last season.

While I do know there are some players who can bring what they bring to any team regardless of their teammates on this one I feel different. When you have Rashard Lewis, Hedo, and even in some cases Dwight roaming around out there you're the guy who nobody is paying attention to and it frees you up to do things that you would not be able to do if you were covered by an opponent - which will happen when you're on a bad team.

A guy like Nate Robinson can bring his show to any team and do what he does regardless of who he is playing with. A guy like Jackie Butler cannot as we saw him flounder terribly on a good Spurs team. Gortat to me falls in the Butler category and not the Nate category.

Not going to sit here and claim I know for sure but that's the feeling I get when watching him.

When you add a Chris Dudley to a team full of Chris Dudleys you get a team full of Chris Dudleys. That's what would happen if we added Gortat to today's roster.
