Strictly going to be for work. When does Windows 7 come out? That seems to be the real deal, do all the techies in here agree? All I really need is Outlook 07 on the computer, for it to run fast, and be reliable. I don't really want to spend more than 1k.

I like this HP.

I have a samsung q70, seems pretty reliable to me. Also light so good for carrying to meetings.

IMO the most important thing for reliability, after the OS is which anitvirus you get. The wrong one will bog down your system terribly and cause all sorts of screwups.

Windows 7 is going to be released in October - if you can I would wait until then but you dont necessarily need it for what you want to do. Personally I love Windows 7 but it is similar to Vista so you will get a comparable experience - although 7 uses less resources and is a little faster.

Outlook will run great on most systems that you buy right now.

You could also get a netbook if you just want something to check e-mail on, or do you want a larger screen?

Thats an ok laptop for the price. Do you want the large screen? If so, thats a good deal. Look into Netbooks or something like http://bensbargains.net/deal/103489/ which is a faster machine with a smaller screen.

Windows 7 is not as resource intensive but it is also incredibly mature. It has a larger driver database out of the box. With Vista, often times you will need to connect to the internet and download SP2. If you can, wait till Windows 7 is announced.

Thanks for the recommendations. I may wait it out until October for Windows 7, from what I've read about it and heard first-hand, its 2 legit 2 quit.

how about the difference between XP and windows 7? i've used vista and don't really like how slow it is, and if i can avoid having to wait another 4 months to buy it, that would be nice. is XP a solid OS? will windows 7 have a ton of kinks they need to work out upon release like vista?

When I got my Samsung, I deleted Vista and installed XP. Havent used the SP's on Vista, but if you dont want to wait for 7 to come out, I would go with XP. Youre not missing anything on the compatibility front, and it is much faster.

And absolutely 7 will have kinks. They all do when they come out. I always wait for the first SP before I upgrade my OS.

Whatever laptop you end up getting, don't get suckered into the Windows 7 hype.

Windows sucks, from 95 to XP to Vista.

You'll want to ignore all that hype and whatever they try to push you as far as Windows 7 is concerned-- get your laptop and promptly install a Linux distribution; Ubuntu is very simple for first time users. The upfront time investment of installing and configuring a linux operating system is well worth it in the long run, and you'll be able to avoid the Windows 7 marketing gimmicks.

Personally, I think Windows 7 is exceptional, I've had the beta and am using the RC now - they are both huge improvements by Microsoft over what they've been putting out the past 10-12 years.

really? kills OSX in what way? it's faster? more integrated multimedia apps? more stable? haven't read a thing on Win 7 yet.

performance will be argued forever but windows 7 has some nice features:
- organized taskbar
- systray
- aero peak
- faster search
- right click to get different menu of frequently used
and the biggest most important advantage is you can have it on any difference number of brand name laptops, PCs, netbooks etc. I like to have different sized keyboard, memory card slots, USB ports front back and on different sides etc. You can pick a laptop/netbook as per you preference instead of choosing what apple wants you to have.

If you want a better OS, use ubuntu or fedora. incredibly stable and unbelievably secure. When it comes to commerical, microsoft + hardware manufacturer is the way to go.

^but I don't think Microsoft Windows is crap. Try working Linux in a corporate environment! Its a mess. Even though i hate to say this, Windows is lot easier than Linux and just as stable if its a smart user between keyboard and chair.

Mac's not as simple and cheap as Windows and not as stable as Linux. And Macs don't work in a corporate environment. And I cannot image running a mail server or DC on a ****ing Apple server!

I didn't like their business practices but I think they are making some good products now. Windows 7 is pretty secure and you never saw the raw sockets problems in Windows Vista. IE8 is not that bad, its not their fault nobody upgrades from IE6. Tell me why you think they are evil and I will agree or disagree.

They were a crappy company in the past because they were a monopoly/ They are a different company now. They are threatened by Google on the web side and Linux on the server side. They are going to keep their monopoly on the desktop side but if they come out with a good product ie: Windows 7, we should not complain.

HAHAHAHA! Yes, that is evil. Do you remember the bull**** marketing campaign against Redhat they started in 1999? They should have studied what made linux better and implemented that in Windows instead. Thats what big businesses do, can't just criticize Microsoft for it. Wrong thread for this discussion though. I still think a Windows laptop is a good purchase. I have a laptop and a netbook both running Windows.

P.S: Leonidas - Fedora 11 is out Tuesday.
