According to a source, the Knicks offered to purchase the Grizzlies' 27th pick for $3 million but were turned down.

The Knicks also have interest in trading for center Darko Milicic, possibly in exchange for Quentin Richardson. Both Milicic and Richardson are entering the final year of their contracts.

Well at least we are trying this year. There might be a pg available there and as someone on the other board mentioned, perhaps we are eying the best available player at 8 (not a PG) and a PG later on. An idea anyway...

$3 million is the maximum cash transaction amount... so teams just straight up offer $3 million to a possible seller, to avoid another team trumping the original bidder's offer.

sorry man, this will without a doubt never happen baring some kind of uber-bizarre situation.

no team is ever going to sell the #1 pick for $3 mil.

What could the Knicks possibly want with the 27th pick. Thoughts anyone? I like to think that Rubio is going to tank in the draft just as Lampe did, but that is wishful thinking.

Its a lower 1st round pick. Last year teams did trade their picks for cash.

Easier sell to the (few) Memphis fans... it looks like they are building for the future with the pick and Crittenton... a straight up sale of a pick is a slap to the face

The Tommy D article on this deal has a bit more flavor...
We knew that the Grizz could be a match, and apparently sources are telling the Memphis Commercial Appeal that Donnie Walsh is trying to find some action involving Darko Milicic and a late first rounder.

“…The New York Knicks offered to buy the Grizzlies’ 27th pick for $3million, according to a source. The Griz turned down that proposal.

The Knicks, according to speculation, also expressed interest in acquiring center Darko Milicic in a deal that could possibly include Quentin Richardson, whose $9.3 million contract expires after the 2009-10 season. Milicic will earn $7.5 million this upcoming season — the last of a three-year, $21 million deal.

…”No matter what people tell you right now, things change before draft night,” (Memphis GM Chris) Wallace said. “Whatever answers you’ve gotten now, you don’t rest on those answers. You keep churning.”

Ronald Tillery, who wrote this, is said to have serious ties to sources close to the Grizz front office so this is legit. Tillery was all over the Randolph rumors and that trade didn’t go down, as I learned, because the Grizzlies wanted a first round pick in return and Walsh turned them down before shipping Z-Bo’s mammoth contract to LA-LA land.

Two things of note here, one Walsh is trying to obtain more picks and, as we told you from day 1 of the offseason, this team’s roster should look drastically different come October.

Also, I think Q for Darko is a comparative deal for both sides and wouldn’t mind seeing it get done. Sure, Q has been one of the few leaders on the team, but you can expect more veterans on the roster (Nash?) to lead this team next season.

I wonder if we're looking for one of the foreigners there like Nando De Colo.

Jodi Meeks?
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

this is a bit of a rehash, but for those of you who think the Knicks should have gotten more from the Zbo or Crawford trades.... the Grizz, who GAVE away Gasol, were demanding a first round FROM the Knicks to take on Zach.

Martin we know that the NBA is a setup league and Lakers have their wish for anything they want. How many HOFers have gone through LA-LA land. You name it they have HOFs at every position and then some for each position. Where as the Knicks can't get squat. I'm not gonna say its all about the GM its not all about the GM its about the league needing the Lakers to win.

We could always trade Mobley's 9.5 million (7 million of it is INSURED) dollar expiring contract for a like contract player and get a first along with it. That is a HUGE savings for a team. I believe we could trade it for an approximate 7.5 million dollar contract and a first round pick (roughly a salary of between 1 and 2 million).

So a team would in a sense be getting rid of their salaried player's salary FOR FREE and selling their first round pick for profit. IF we did that we could probably count on A LOT hire of a pick, cause 7 million is a lot to just write off the books.

I honestly can't see a team in financial trouble turning that down.

A guarantee with the 27th pick might keep Jodie Meeks in this draft - if he eventually finds out that he's slated to go in the 2nd round, he'll probably withdraw and go back to school in the hopes of cracking the 1st round next year (KU could win it all next year, esp. if Meeks goes back). Taj Gibson at 27 would make for an excellent pick up also.
