I know the majority of the board will disagree; Ben Wallace was a top 5-10 player in the NBA in 2004 and 2005. His defense, shotblocking, intdimidation and presence totally controlled the game. To me, he was the best player on those winning Detroit teams. Since he left Detroit for his big raise he has been INVISIBLE.

What happened?

Maybe the steroids wasted his body.

I considered him to be an average athlete with below average BB skills, even when he was at his best, and once he lost his physical edge there was not much he could do to compensate for this loss, like a Jordan or Jabbar was able to do.

average athlete? Wow. I thought he was an exceptional athlete with superior defensive skill and low offensive skills. And I thought that his BBIQ on the defensive end was very high.

He got old the past few years and I heard that he had knee and leg problems this year.

Never thought he was that coordinated, and in most of the "skill" aspects of the sport he was sub-par. He could block shots, rebound, and dunk, that was about it. Does not mean that I would not want him on my team in his prime, but the fact that he has not been able to adapt as he got older says a lot. When I talk about an "athlete" I am talking about a lot of things, by the way.

And I do believe that he was juiced up.

whatever he was, he was a defensive player of the year and i agree the best player on a championship team. (though billups was obviously the shot taker and maker)

We may have to just disagree on this one. Put aside for the fact that he is offensively inept, that is just a given.

...He knows defense and team defense, which leads me to believe that he is a smart basketball player who DID adapt. He is strong as a bull, cat quick and must have studied opposing teams offenses to get to the point where he was Defensive Player of the Year. Dude is 6'8", and at that height it is amazing what he accomplished.

You look at his game at the time he laced up his Steve and Barry's skippies and you'll see a direct corelation to his decline.

Same with Marbury.

Those freakin shoes ruined those two guys.

I think Ben's game was predicated on outstanding effort and athleticism. Once he slowed up a step, he became a washed up former effort player.

David Lee might follow the same path, as might Bird Man.

We saw it happen ourselves to Junkyard Dog Jerome Williams.

Something's up with him. He was a scrub for years, then he magically turned into this super energy player --- then like that, scrub. I'll leave others to speculate, but thats mighty suspicious.

Shotblocking is a skill. Ben definitely had that skill.
