LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and the core of the Olympic basketball champions could be back in USA uniforms next summer for the world championships.

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo met with half of the team during the NBA All-Star break and said it's a "distinct possibility" that some of the gold medalists will play in Turkey in 2010.

During the meeting, which also included Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Chris Bosh, Colangelo said he wanted only a two-year commitment this time, with those years being 2010 and 2012. If the Americans win the world championships, they would automatically qualify for the London Games and not have to play in '11.

"They said they bought into that, let's do that," Colangelo said.

New York Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni , a U.S. assistant the past three years, is a leading candidate if Krzyzewski doesn't return.

that's awesome news. it makes a knick fan feel better because our coach is the US olympic coach. we're really lucky to have MDA and Walsh here, let us be reminded of this.

We fired the last Championship coach we had.

Imagine an olympic selection process so bad it picks Marbury as the starting PG with Larry as his coach.

Its come a long way!

Larry was picked based on respect of his career but as good as he is, he was not a good pick to work with AllStars on such a short notice. Great coach, wrong gig. Wrong coach, great gig!

Coach K was instintly accepted based on his cred (same as larry) but he is much more tolerant of them and met them halfway. He also had Chris Paul, not BrainDeadBury.

MDA has an easy going nature, is respected and will employ a system that plays to NBA strengths, not their weakness'. I understand what Larry was trying to do, but he did not have time to break down All Star's and put them back in his methoed. Melo was still a young punk and Lebron was not quite the lebron of today. Also lets not forget Larrys team was missing Kobe, KG and a few others (in their peak prime!) because of terror concerns in the aftermath of 9-11.

Little did we know the terror that was Larry!!!

it says he is THE LEADING CANDIDATE to be coach IF COACH K DOESN'T COME BACK.
