as i mentioned in BRIGGS' Memphis old potential deal thread...
http://ultimateknicks.com/forum/topic.asp?t=31083
the big thing with rubio is that rubio has a $8 mil (?) buyout and an nba team can only cover $500K.

the hope is a better endorsement deal with nike could cover the rest because they want him in the nba over europe.

this could be something that could help him push for ny.

the other thing is i think he can drop out of the draft still (?)

given the market size of all teams above us from 2-7 -- outside of golden state who would probably love to have him -- and his "NEED" (to quote martin) to play for a big market to get the money to pay for the buyout, i could very well see us moving up somehow to take him.

i think we would have to get to at least pick 6, because the warriors would be sure to take him, but you would have to figure just to be safe you want to get to 2 or 3.

hard to know how that would happen just yet, but something to keep in mind.

EDIT: I forgot agout the Wiz who are in a pretty big market. I think we'd need to get to pick 4, unless D.C. would deal too (I think they might like Rubio though)

i think this became more of a reality once the clippers got the #1 pick.

how odd is it that this might be a good thing for us (if you want us to get him).

the wizards are in luxury tax and need to save money.

if the knicks are willing to take on contracts, they can probably swap up to the wizards pick at 5. but then that hurts 2010.

damn you, now I have to move my reponse to you in other thread over here.

Mostly it has to do with Marcus Williams finally breaking out of this shell and getting in the PG way of Rubio to GS.

Monta Ellis, Jamal Crawford. Bellini. I guess that's a lot of shooting guards.

Yup. This is Rubio's leverage and his debt. He NEEDS a big market to cover the buyout. Scratch Memphis out.

“Clearly, we’re taking Blake Griffin,” Clippers General Manager and Coach Mike Dunleavy said in a telephone interview from Barcelona, Spain. “This guy is the No. 1 pick. We’re extremely excited. He’s the guy.”

Yeah, Dunleavy himself said he's taking Griffin, no ifs or buts.

Yeah Ike, I agree with you. I've said so far in a few threads today that I think Rubio still ends up with the Knicks somehow, mainly because (as you pointed out) of his buyout. I still think the Knicks work there way in somewhere and pick him up. Gentleman's agreements are made all the time in sports on draft night. I see this as being no different in respects to Lee/Nate.

just to correct myself and go back to djsu's point about dealing with washington...

the wiz ain't in a small market.

we'd have to get to pick 4 at least, unless the wiz would deal too.

If these guys think Rubio is the basketball jesus or whatever--then they should offer whatever it takes to get a deal done[of course im not in that camp but its not our call] the nba is made up of a few great players and everyone else. If you believe in your heart rubio is that kind of player--then anything on the roster becomes available--were a 30 win team over 10 years--we do have a change in strategy in the works with free agency so I would think anything should be on the table to change the fortunes of the franchise.

Michael: I'll make him an offer he can't refuse circa 1972 style

btw, there is no indication, thus far that this is a reality at all.

i am PURELY SPECULATING, but based on what seems to be like something that makes some sense, regardless of how much you seem to hate the guy, and label him "jesus" (who said that?).

i am just proposing that it could be that the knicks could get him based on the draft order, rubio's buyout situation, and the knicks seeming like a team that would love to have him.

golden state has a better chance moving up than us and rubio wouldn't mind playing there. it is the same story every year with a player supposedly WANTING to go to ny and they are going to work out a deal like yao ming or lebron james. look, the same story is going to happen draft day. no deals for us ( that are good anyway)and we use our pick probably to get stephan curry to replace nate robinson who we will lose this summer. i would be fine with this but not ecstatic.

The last time the Wiz had a high value pick, they traded it for Jamison (to Dallas, a #5 which turned into Devin Harris). I could see the Wiz trading this pick to add a veteran that could help immediately... someone that adds to Arenas-Young-Butler-Jamison. David Lee would be that guy, except that he isn't under contract, and cannot be traded draft night. Fuck

curry as a replacement to nate would be very welcome from my view. if you look at it this way, then by all means go for curry, let rubio live. i still wish much success onto rubio, though.

Rubio Will Use Leverage To Avoid Memphis, OKC?

May 21, 2009 11:10 AM EST

Ricky Rubio has some leverage in influencing which team selects him due to a necessary buyout from his team in Spain. His American agent Dan Fegan tried to shape where Yi Jianlian was selected in 2007, but was unsuccessful due to Milwaukee taking a hard line and no real alternative in his foreign contract.

“Rubio doesn’t want to go to Memphis, and he especially does not want to pay money out of his own pocket with that huge buyout for the honor of doing so," said a source that spoke to DraftExpress.com. "Fegan wants him in L.A., and if he can’t have him there, he wants him in Sacramento. Definitely not Oklahoma City.

“He’ll pull out if he doesn’t like what he’s hearing,” continued the source. “Or he can stay in and force the Grizzlies to call his bluff—would they really take him knowing that he may never come over? That’s one way to get him to fall to three.”

Sounds like good news for us...
