I've always watched him and though "meh," but I've been taking a closer look at him lately, and there's a few qualities that really stand out and his numbers show him to be one of the most efficient PG's in the country.

1) He is tops in his draft class with a 3.48 A/TO ratio, which isn't just good, but downright outstanding for a college player. You rarely see guys with mid 3's number at this age and his 6.6 assists, and actually his assists per 40 minutes is also tops in his draft class.

2) He shot well above 50% from the field and showed shot restraint playing with the most talented group of players in the country for several season at UNC. But when he needed to, he could get to the basket and draw a foul In fact he is one of the most efficent shooters from the PG position in his class- here's an excerpt from draftexpress:

As we put this data together, we weren’t surprised that Ty Lawson excelled from a situational perspective, as he did play for the most potent offense in all of college basketball, but we didn’t expect him to look this good. He ranks first in a number of key categories, including overall FG% (52%), Points Per Possession [PPP](1.13), pull up jump shot FG% (47%), and %shots he was fouled on (16.1%). Though his teammates did a lot of scoring as well, Lawson functioned seamlessly as a complementary scorer. Looking past his efficiency as a shooter off the dribble, he was second in catch and shoot field goal percentage at 48%. From a purely statistical sense, no player on this list scored more efficiently than Lawson.

3) Experience, leadership and winning. These are the key traits you look for in a PG and he has them all. He was arguably the most impressive player in the NCAA tournament.

4) Playing with several NBA prospect and outstanding talent is a plus from the perspective of looking for a prospective PG. Here's a guy that was able to help other talents shine- that to me will help him translate to the NBA level.

Bottom line is he looks like a pure PG and the perfect kind of player for a system like this from an offensive standpoint. What is working against him?

1) Size
2) defense
3) Scoring- but here's a guy that can get to the basket and draw a foul in crunch time. He did that an outstanding rate.

What are your thoughts? Is he worth the 8? Should he be our PG of the future?

He is not a good pick at number 8 because there much better value plus he is way to small. If he is in 20 to 30 range he is good pick but not at 8 pick.

I gotta hear more- who presents a better value, especially at the PG position and why? He's got all the other PG's on lockdown in terms of Assist to turnover ratio, assists per minute and shooting efficiency.

I think at the end of the day--too small. I barely saw a guy 6-3 make an impact in a serious playoff game tonight. It was all intermediate and big sized players. What is Ty Lawson going to do against 7 footers in the lane?

Ty is too small for his game to translate. He won't be able to dribble in traffic as he can in NCAA.

He is prone to get nicked up with injury. He uses his body and gets beaten up in 30 games, he won't be able to keep that up in NBA.

This is a low 1st rounder good for 15 min a game. On a good team he will be an asset. This guy reminds me a lot of Phil Ford but smaller.

The guy is good, its no small feat to be a 1st rounder@

he is pretty well-built too. i was high on lawson a lot but everyone said the same thing "too small, will get knocked up, can't score in the lane."

look, fact of the matter is he was NC's primary ballhandler and they dominated this season, the ball is like velcro in his hands in traffic he routinely goes in the lane and hardly ever turns the ball over, and baseline to baseline he maybe the fastest guy in the NBA. not to mention he comes from a good fam and has been a hardworker since grade school (see an article about NC and nova before their final 4 b/c he and dante cunningham played PAL together).

as i've said before, i like lawson, i like stef curry, i like jonny showtime flynn a lot (same issues with size though), and i'm very intrigued by tyreke evans. the knicks need a point, and there are plenty of talented ones in the draft. the most important thing is walsh and d'antoni figure out who's the right guy and picks that guy.

I like Lawson, too. Six feet is a little shorter than average for point guard, but not 'too small'. For the team that drafts him, he'll run the offense, score and keep players in front of him on the defensive end. And teams that passed up on him because he was 'too small' will look very foolish.

how tall is Chris Paul?

How tall is Nate?

I wish we would stop pre judging players just on height alone.

Channing Frye is 6'11" and about to be out of this league!

Now that said - there are so many guys that we should be grabbing, but with late first round picks.

WALSH HAS TO BUY AT LEAST ONE FIRST ROUNDER!

I'm not going to go so far as to say, size doesn't matter and Lawson wouldn't be better if he were two or three inches taller. But when you have a guy who's a very good passer, a very good shooter and who's strong and quick, you have to look at his attributes, too. As franco said, don't judge the guy on height alone.

Last season, a similar player, D J Augustin, had a very good rookie season. I remember Clyde complimenting his game when we played the Bobcats. If Curry is gone when we pick, I wouldn't mind trading back a few spots and getting Lawson. He could play behind Duhon (who's 6'1) for a season and start when Duhon's contract expires in 2010. He's not a future star, but he'll be a good starting point guard.

Its about the type of game that Lawson has, not his height.

Nate can jump out of the building. Augustin has a differnt skill set then Lawson.

EXACTLY, nate is a freak athlete with a nice set of offensive skills lawson wish he had..

Augustine as you said has a different skill set and a better offensive game..

I am not a lawson fan.. he has mateen cleaves written all over his game.. maybe I am wrong, but I don't see how his game will translate on the NBA level...
