I've always watched him and though "meh," but I've been taking a closer look at him lately, and there's a few qualities that really stand out and his numbers show him to be one of the most efficient PG's in the country.
1) He is tops in his draft class with a 3.48 A/TO ratio, which isn't just good, but downright outstanding for a college player. You rarely see guys with mid 3's number at this age and his 6.6 assists, and actually his assists per 40 minutes is also tops in his draft class.
2) He shot well above 50% from the field and showed shot restraint playing with the most talented group of players in the country for several season at UNC. But when he needed to, he could get to the basket and draw a foul In fact he is one of the most efficent shooters from the PG position in his class- here's an excerpt from draftexpress:
As we put this data together, we weren’t surprised that Ty Lawson excelled from a situational perspective, as he did play for the most potent offense in all of college basketball, but we didn’t expect him to look this good. He ranks first in a number of key categories, including overall FG% (52%), Points Per Possession [PPP](1.13), pull up jump shot FG% (47%), and %shots he was fouled on (16.1%). Though his teammates did a lot of scoring as well, Lawson functioned seamlessly as a complementary scorer. Looking past his efficiency as a shooter off the dribble, he was second in catch and shoot field goal percentage at 48%. From a purely statistical sense, no player on this list scored more efficiently than Lawson.
3) Experience, leadership and winning. These are the key traits you look for in a PG and he has them all. He was arguably the most impressive player in the NCAA tournament.
4) Playing with several NBA prospect and outstanding talent is a plus from the perspective of looking for a prospective PG. Here's a guy that was able to help other talents shine- that to me will help him translate to the NBA level.
Bottom line is he looks like a pure PG and the perfect kind of player for a system like this from an offensive standpoint. What is working against him?
1) Size 2) defense 3) Scoring- but here's a guy that can get to the basket and draw a foul in crunch time. He did that an outstanding rate.
What are your thoughts? Is he worth the 8? Should he be our PG of the future?
