Wayman Tisdale, the legendary Oklahoma Sooner who this year was elected to the College Basketball Hall of Fame, died Friday morning. He was 44.

His passing was confirmed by the University of Oklahoma.

The three-time All-American at Oklahoma, who lost his right leg to bone cancer, had been fighting the disease since 2007. The cancer was discovered when doctors were repairing his leg, which he broke after falling down stairs in his home.

It was determined, then, that the the best course of treatment was to amputate Tisdale's leg, just above the knee.

Tisdale was a collegiate star at Oklahoma, where he averaged 25.6 points and 10.1 rebounds during his three-year career.

He played 12 seasons in the NBA, averaging 15.3 points and 6.1 rebounds in 840 games. His best season came in 1989-90 with Sacramento, where he averaged 22.3 points and 7.5 rebounds.

This sucks. He was fun to watch in Sacto. I wouldn't be surprised if the Thunder retire his number.

Wow this is sad news. He truly made the most of his gifts in life rather in basketball or music. I recall he was the number 2 pick behind Ewing.

This makes me very sad. Tisdale was a great college player. He was actually more dominant than Brooke Lopez. He was a good pro, but his college success did not translate into the dominant player everyone thought he would be.

But more importantly, he was known as a very good person and it is tragic that he was taken at such a young age.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

I remember a show that he did once where he gave pointer on shooting. Elbow pointed towards the hoop. The next thing I did was go out and practice what he said, my jumper was falling from all angles.

Great college player...Dominant...I just saw a piece on him about a year ago talking about his cancer and his amputation...Great family life and he had his music...Sad stuff...I grew up watching guys like Tisdale is college...One of the great colllege players that didn't take that dominance to the next level...RIP...Great career at OK....The hits just keep coming...

he was crazy good in college. like blake griffin was this year.

and a very very cool guy. i feel terrible for him for what he must have gone through in his last couple of years of life.

His career after BB was also very admirable. He was a wonderful musician.

I would've loved to have him come to my Recording Studio in Macon Georgia to record and talk Basketball. That would've been awesome.

I haven't really reflected on 'Tis passing because it is so strange. This guy is in my age bracket and it just makes me ponder so many different things. This man was so young and full of life.
