Yikes at this draft....Got about four future hall of famers, a gang of multiple All-stars selected. Best draft of all time.

And lo and behold, the Knicks actually had three picks in the first round and completely whiffed on all three.

@ John Wallace, Walter McCarthy, and Dontay Jones...they didnt even have the decency to select a serviceable player.

If they would have traded up just a few slots they could have put the names on a dart board, hit it blindfolded and come up with a future All-star at least.

Is this the most humiliating draft performance of all time?

No doubt, but I'm talking about overall. Knicks missed three times in damn near a foolproof draft.

in terms of draft futility - i think the knicks rank pretty high up there over the past 20 years...

or maybe we missed on Kobe Bryant? trading a #18, 19 & 21 to move up to 13 could have netted us some majorly different results... of course, hindsight is always 20/20... still it's pretty obvious we royally fugged up that draft.

Not that big of a deal when players like Nash, Jermaine O'Neal, and Kobe were drafted a few slots before ours?

kerry kittles was a darn good player before he got injured. not great, but he was a key part of the team when the nets moved one of their fubars, shawn bradley, for cassell.

with cassell, kittles (in his second year) and van horn (as a rookie) they were an up and coming team and made the playoffs and looked on the rise.

then kittles got hurt, they trade for marbury, who clashes with van horn, etc. and the team falls apart, until they get kidd, jefferson & k-mart.

kittles, i feel, isn't so much a bust as someone who had his career hurt by injuries.

why are we not surprised the clippers took lorenzen wright back in the day...

that dude NEVER did jack in the NBA.

Samaki Walker too..and Todd Fuller...oooo boy.

Potapenko was at least a rotation player on a few teams, as i recall?

1996 revisited. As I remember correctly. Grunfeld tried to move up to obtain Bryant but was rebuff by the Hornets who wanted Vlade from the Lakers. Tried to move up to get O'Neal but was rebuff by Portland were planning on moving up if necessary to take him. Tried to move up to obtain Nash who the Knicks scouts were crazy about but once again were blown off. For whatever reason, no team wanted to take on extra picks but I suspect it was related to the 96 free agency and the fact that many GMs view the 96 draft as very top heavy. Grunfeld was very upset that he had to use all 3 draft picks if I remember correctly.

True but that is the risk a team runs sometimes when having multiple mid to late picks. Ernie was hoping to move up to the lottery but instead was shut out.

i have a hard time believing that if he'd offered all 3 picks to try & move up a couple slots that there were no takers... but whatever, none of us really know what was discussed & what was offered.

I am just going by what was reported prior to and after the draft. The Knicks were high on Bryant, Nash and O'Neal (at future PF). They also wanted Z but teams didn't want to deal with the Knicks. Grunfeld was so confident that he was going to move the picks before the draft too. There were rumors that teams block out the Knicks from making a deal. I forget the reason but I think it was related to the 96 free agency.

The Knicks are trying to move up in today's college draft by trading their 19th and 21st picks to a team holding a selection between 10 and 15, a league official said last night.

"If I could move up to the top 10 or top 12, I would look very hard into trading up," General Manager Ernie Grunfeld said yesterday. "But it depends on how high we move up and whether or not it makes sense."

In the pool of players that might be available to the Knicks should they pull off a draft-day deal are the high school phenom Kobe Bryant, Georgetown forward Jerome Williams, Santa Clara point guard Steve Nash and Vitaly Potapenko, the 6-foot-10-inch forward from Wright State.

The Knicks also have the 18th pick, but they do not think the player they are seeking would be available that late. Indiana, Golden State, Cleveland, Charlotte, Sacramento and Phoenix hold Nos. 10-15.

The Knicks worked out nearly 20 players over the last few weeks, including Nash, Kentucky's Walter McCarty and Mississippi State's Dontae' Jones over the weekend. Though they would probably resist taking a point guard, they might take a chance on Nash.

As for their later picks if they do not make a deal, Jermaine O'Neal, another high school entrant; Alabama center Roy Rogers, who never met a blocked shot he did not like; the Indiana sharpshooter Brian Evans and Ryan Minor, the Oklahoma forward, are all possibilities.

"I'm content with the picks we have," Grunfeld said. "Of course, if trades do go down, they could go down late on draft day. But if we keep them, we just have more chips."

Grunfeld added he was "having a lot of conversations," and was quick not to rule out the possibility of a trade today that could land a proven scorer in New York. A trade that would involve the 18th and 19th picks to the Los Angeles Lakers for Cedric Ceballos was rumored, but a club official shot it down last night.

With the flurry of activity around the league, the Knicks simply do not have much to give (Patrick Ewing is not an option) and, conversely, do not want to mortgage their future on a gamble.

While no one in the draft appears to be headed with Ewing to the All-Star Game next February, the Knicks seem ready to build with the draft and fortify through the free agent bidding war that begins Monday (barring a lockout).

I remember that draft well.. Bill Hanzlik, former basketball player was working for the Hawks I think and he was on a TV sports talk show here in Atlanta. I called in the show to ask him what he thought about the Knicks 3 picks... He pretty much was right on the mark.. He said out side of John wallace, the other guys, Mccarty and Jones were somewhat tweeners and questioned if they were NBA caliber players...

They tried to move up and couldn't. As far as the picks they made there were a handful of slightly better players and only one truly better player they missed on.
